Chapter 13: The State Attorney General’s Office

The grand marble lobby of the State Attorney General’s Office echoed with the sharp click of Katie’s boots against the polished stone floor. She looked disheveled—her coat torn at the shoulder, her cheeks scratched by pine branches, her eyes dark with exhaustion—but her posture was unyielding.
She bypassed the main reception desk, heading straight for the security checkpoint where she demanded to speak directly with Special Prosecutor Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian, a notoriously incorruptible prosecutor who had spent the last five years dismantling corporate corruption syndicates across the tri-state area.
Within twenty minutes, Katie was seated inside a quiet, high-security conference room on the fourth floor, flanked by two armed federal marshals. Across the sleek glass table sat Special Prosecutor Vance, a silver-haired man with sharp, analytical eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. He listened in absolute silence as Katie slid the small digital voice recorder across the table and laid out the printed financial ledgers alongside her mother’s notarized estate documents.
Marcus picked up the recorder with gloved fingers. He plugged a portable interface cable into his secure laptop, loading the audio file directly into the office's forensic transcription software.
A few moments later, the audio filled the quiet room. Julian’s cold threat echoed off the glass walls, followed by her mother’s defiant refusal, the struggle, and the final, damning words confirming the homicide.
Marcus stared down at the screen for a long, heavy moment before looking up to meet Katie’s exhausted gaze.
"This is an unedited, original audio file," Marcus said quietly, his voice carrying immense professional gravity. "Combined with these corporate embezzlement ledgers and the conflicting timeline provided by the local precinct during their initial sweep, this gives us everything we need for a federal indictment on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy, and first-degree murder."
A wave of profound relief washed over Katie, so intense she felt lightheaded. The suffocating weight she had carried since the funeral finally began to lift from her chest.
"Will they move tonight?" Katie asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
May you like
"They are moving right now," Marcus replied, standing up and pressing a button on his desk intercom. "Federal marshals are already executing warrants at Julian Vance’s downtown residence and corporate headquarters. He won't have time to transfer a single cent or catch a flight out of the country."
