Chapter 5

The metallic echo of the intercom voice hung in the air like a death sentence. Routine wellness check at midnight. It was a transparent lie designed to force Clara out into the open or compel her to unlock the door so they could gain physical control of the room. Maya whimpered, her hands gripping Clara’s wrist with surprising strength.

"Don't let them in, Mom," Maya pleaded, her voice trembling as tears spilled over her bruised cheeks. "They're the ones who took me to the basement."

Clara didn't hesitate. She stepped away from the bed, quickly checking the manual slide latch on the door to ensure it was fully engaged. The heavy wood rattled as someone on the other side tested the handle, applying firm, authoritative pressure.

"Mrs. Vance, we know you're awake," a deep, controlled male voice spoke through the wood—the voice of a professional who was used to compliance. "Open the door immediately. Refusing hospital directives violates visitation protocols and will result in your immediate removal from the premises."

"Try it and I'll shatter every window in this ward!" Clara shouted back, her voice ringing with a fierce, unyielding defiance that surprised even herself. She gripped the heavy metal flashlight in her pocket, bracing her shoulder against the wall beside the door frame. She wasn't going to let them drag her or Maya anywhere.

Outside, there was a brief pause, followed by the muffled sound of hushed voices conferring in the hallway. Clara used those critical seconds to look down at her smartphone screen. Her fingers flew across the glass, opening the family tracking application linked to Maya's account. Because Maya and Emily had shared their real-time locations for safety during their walk to the community center, Clara’s screen loaded a detailed digital map of the city.

A pulsing blue dot marked Maya’s current location at St. Jude Memorial Hospital. But just a few blocks away, near the abandoned Miller estate on the edge of the industrial district, a second, smaller red icon blinked steadily: Emily’s Phone - Last ping received 11:32 PM.

The phone was still powered on. That meant Emily was either nearby, or the backpack containing the device was still with her wherever she had been taken after being left behind at the property.

Before Clara could screenshot the coordinates, the heavy wooden door shuddered violently. A loud, metallic thud echoed through the room as someone threw their weight against the exterior, testing the structural integrity of the latch. The manual lock held, but the wooden frame splintered slightly around the bolt, sending small flakes of white paint raining down onto the floor.

"Last warning, Mrs. Vance! Open the door or we will use master security override!"

Clara looked back at Maya. The girl was shaking uncontrollably, her eyes wide with terror. Clara knew that staying in this room was a dead end. If the security team breached the door, they would separate her from Maya by force, sedate her, and disappear her daughter into a private wing before dawn. She needed to create a distraction, get Maya out, or buy enough time to slip out through the secondary service exit she had noticed on the architectural map near the nurses' station.

"Maya, listen to me," Clara said, kneeling beside the bed and grabbing both of the girl's cold hands. "I am going to open the door just enough to throw them off balance. When I say run—well, you can't run with the brace, but I need you to press the emergency code blue button on the wall as hard as you can. It will flood this entire floor with medical staff and security alarms. Do you understand?"

Maya swallowed hard, her jaw trembling, but she nodded resolutely. "I understand, Mom."

Clara stood up, taking a deep, steadying breath. She felt the heavy metal flashlight in her right hand, its weight grounding her completely. With her left hand, she reached out and violently threw the manual latch open, simultaneously yanking the heavy wooden door inward.

The sudden movement caught the man standing on the other side off guard—a burly security guard in a dark uniform who had been preparing to shoulder-check the lock again. He stumbled forward into the room, losing his balance for a split second.

That split second was all Clara needed.
