Chapter 10

The silence inside the drafty carriage house grew heavy, thick with the weight of unspoken threats and impending violence. Richard Sterling stood at the base of the wooden staircase, his hands resting casually inside the pockets of his tweed jacket, radiating the absolute certainty of a man who owned the judges, the police, and the ground beneath his feet. Marcus Vance hovered near the side exit, his tactical flashlight still aimed blindingly at Clara’s chest, blocking her only physical route of escape.
Clara didn't blink. The terror that had gripped her earlier when she first saw Maya in the hospital bed had completely evaporated, transmuted by grief and incandescent rage into something cold, sharp, and lethal.
"You think you've won," Clara said, her voice steady and carrying a quiet resonance that made Marcus Vance’s hand twitch slightly on his flashlight. "You think because you can buy judges and cover up a car crash, you're untouchable. But you made one critical mistake, Richard."
Richard raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine curiosity crossing his polished features. "Oh? And what was that, Mrs. Vance?"
"You left Emily's phone active," Clara replied, a faint, razor-sharp smile touching the corners of her lips. "Before I left the car, the cloud backup protocol finished syncing every single coordinate, text message, and audio recording Emily captured during her ride with Julian this afternoon. Including Julian admitting that your firm ordered him to run the demonstration roadblock at the quarry to intimidate the environmental protestors."
Richard’s composure fractured instantly. The cool, aristocratic mask slipped away, revealing a flash of panic in his cold blue eyes. "You're bluffing."
"Am I?" Clara lifted her left hand, revealing her own smartphone. The screen was illuminated, displaying a live automated email queue labeled 'Auto-Release to Federal Task Force & Regional Press: Trigger on Inactivity or Manual Command.' "The transmission timer is set for three minutes, Richard. If I don't hit cancel by twelve-thirty-five, every federal investigator in the state receives the complete unedited file."
Marcus Vance lunged forward with sudden, explosive violence, abandoning all pretense of polite corporate negotiation. "Give me the phone!"
He moved fast, but Clara had anticipated the rush. As Marcus closed the distance, she didn't try to run; she sidestepped sharply, bringing the heavy metal flashlight up in a devastating, calculated swing that caught Marcus square across the bridge of his nose.
A sickening crunch echoed through the carriage house as Marcus stumbled backward, dropping his flashlight and clutching his bleeding face with a sharp cry of agony.
Before Richard Sterling could react, Clara whirled around, sprinting past the blinded fixer and out through the broken side door into the misty courtyard.
"Stop her!" Richard roared from inside, his voice losing all its polished control, replaced by frantic desperation. "Don't let her reach the car!"
Clara didn't look back. She hit the gravel running, her boots splashing through puddles as she sprinted toward the treeline where her beat-up sedan was parked. Her lungs burned with the cold night air, but adrenaline propelled her forward with superhuman speed.

As she burst through the brush, she saw the silhouette of her car under the weeping willow. But as she approached, her heart stopped.
The driver's side window was shattered. Glass covered the asphalt.
