Chapter 8: The Domestic Fortress

While Liam and his legal team prepared for the upcoming court battle, twenty miles away, the ancestral estate remained locked in a tense, unnatural silence. The police tape across the front porch had been removed late that afternoon after the forensic team completed their initial sweep, but the heavy oak door felt like the portal to a tomb.
Inside the expansive dining room, the mahogany table was spotless, the half-eaten plates of food long since cleared away. Elena sat at the head of the table once more, her posture rigidly composed despite her brief detention earlier that morning. Her dark hair remained neatly pinned, but the lines around her mouth were pulled tight with suppressed fury. Opposite her stood Robert, her husband of twenty years, his grey hair unkempt, his shoulders slumped as he stared down into his empty coffee cup.
""The police are overstepping,"" Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, controlled hiss that cut through the silence of the room. ""And Martha... Martha handled the initial visit like an amateur. Screaming at officers only validates their narrative.""
Martha sat a few seats down, her face flushed with indignation. ""I didn't scream without reason, Elena! That boy—that ungrateful bastard of a stepson—stole my granddaughter and brought the authorities down on our home like common criminals! We raised him. We gave him everything.""
""You gave him nothing but a cage, Martha, and you tried to do the same to his daughter,"" Robert muttered quietly, his voice raspy and exhausted. It was the first time he had spoken aloud since the police left.
Elena snapped her head around, her sharp eyes fixing on Robert with an expression of pure venom. ""Watch your tongue, Robert. You think you're innocent in all this? You stood by and watched every decision I made for this family's preservation. If we fall, your precious estate, your investments, and your social standing go down with us. Liam is a transient failure with a criminal past. If we present a united front, the courts will see that he abducted his own child from a stable, affluent home.""
""Stable?"" Robert let out a bitter, humorless laugh, looking up to meet his wife's cold gaze. ""Elena, we watched a five-year-old child get systematically broken down because she didn't fit your aesthetic of perfection. I stayed silent for decades because it was easier than fighting you. But I am not helping you destroy Liam and that little girl any further.""
Martha gasped, slamming her hand onto the table. ""Robert! Have you lost your mind? That boy is turning his back on generations of family legacy!""
May you like
""Family legacy?"" Robert stood up, his tall frame trembling slightly with age and long-suppressed guilt. ""We didn't build a legacy, Martha. We built an institution of fear."" Without another word, he turned his back on them and walked out of the dining room, leaving Elena and Martha alone in the gathering dusk.
