Chapter 2: Into the Night

The cool night air hit Liam’s face like a physical blow as he backed out of the house, pulling the heavy front door shut with a solid click that locked the nightmare behind them. He sprinted down the concrete porch steps, mindful of every step so as not to stumble with Lily in his arms. His breath came in ragged, hyperventilating gasps, the adrenaline still pumping furiously through his veins, masking the cold sting of the autumn wind. He reached his battered sedan parked at the curb, fumbling frantically with his keys before managing to unlock the driver’s door.

He opened the back door first, gently placing Lily into her child seat. He adjusted the straps with trembling fingers, making sure not to press against the dark bruises mottling her soft arms. ""You're okay, baby. Daddy's got you. We're safe now,"" he whispered, his voice catching in his throat as Lily whimpered softly in the dark interior of the car. Her large, frightened blue eyes looked up at him, devoid of the bright, playful light that usually defined his little girl. It was that silent, broken look of betrayal from her own blood relatives that shattered Liam’s heart into dust.

He closed the rear door softly, rounded the front of the vehicle, and slid into the driver’s seat. The engine cranked with a familiar, comforting cough before purring to life. He flicked on the heater, watching the vents blow lukewarm air while his hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles ached. Where could they go? His father had passed away two years ago, leaving the estate under Elena’s legal manipulation and Martha’s traditional tyranny. The rest of the extended family lived under the same toxic roof or remained too terrified of Martha’s financial control to offer sanctuary.

Liam pulled away from the curb, his headlights cutting twin beams through the gathering fog of the suburban street. He knew he couldn't go back to his own apartment either; it was too close, too vulnerable. Elena and Martha had ways of reaching into every corner of their lives. Instead, he steered the car toward the county hospital downtown. Medical documentation was the first vital step. If he was going to protect Lily and sever these poisonous ties forever, he needed cold, undeniable proof of the abuse that had been casually brushed aside as a 'joke' over dinner.

As the car navigated the empty midnight streets, Liam glanced in the rearview mirror every few seconds, checking for headlights trailing behind them. The silence in the car was heavy, punctuated only by Lily’s shallow breathing and the rhythmic thrum of the windshield wipers clearing away a light drizzle that had begun to fall. He reached back, his palm resting gently on Lily’s sneaker. She squeezed his index finger with her tiny, weak hand, a silent gesture of absolute trust that fueled his determination.
