Chapter 5

Elena stepped into the office, her eyes briefly taking in the architectural models and blueprint sketches resting on a side table before she met Arthur’s calm, analytical gaze. He poured two cups of tea from a silver pot on his desk and handed one to her, taking the opposite seat.

“I hope your mother is recovering well from the shock,” Elena said, accepting the teacup with a polite nod.

“She is resting comfortably in the penthouse,” Arthur replied, his expression softening as he spoke of his mother. “The doctor examined her and confirmed there were no injuries, just a racing heart. You gave her a second chance at life today, Elena. And you gave me a stark reminder of what truly matters.”

“It was instinct, Mr. Vance. Anyone would have done the same.”

“No,” Arthur countered gently, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. “Not everyone would have done the same. Julianne proved that just seconds before. Most people freeze when danger strikes. You acted with absolute clarity and courage.” He paused, studying her closely. “I made it my business to look at your employee file before you came up here. I noticed that your educational background includes studies in architectural drafting and structural design. A far cry from hotel service.”

Elena felt a slight tightening in her chest. She was fiercely protective of her private life. “Working at the Grand Horizon pays my bills while I figure out my next steps. It’s an honest living.”

“There is no shame in honest work,” Arthur agreed smoothly. “In fact, I respect it far more than the inherited entitlement of people like Julianne. But talent shouldn’t be buried under hotel linens, either. My firm, Vance Development, is currently designing a new community outreach center on the east side—a project focused on sustainable, community-driven architecture. We are looking for a junior designer with a fresh perspective and genuine grounding in reality.”

Elena set her teacup down on the small glass table, her heart beating a little faster. “Are you offering me a job, Mr. Vance? Based on a twelve-second encounter in a hotel lobby?”

May you like

“I am offering you an interview, Elena,” Arthur corrected with a faint, knowing smile. “Nothing more, nothing less. Your resume caught my attention, and your actions today proved your character. Whether you pass the technical review is entirely up to your skills.”

She looked at him, searching his face for any sign of condescension or pity, finding only genuine professional respect. The opportunity of a lifetime had just been dropped into her lap, born from the ashes of a near-tragedy.
