Chapter 14

Julianne’s voice was venomous, laced with a desperate possessiveness that laid bare her fragile social standing. “You think because you played the hero with an old woman and impressed a few board members with a computerized drawing that you actually belong in our world? Arthur is a pillar of this city's elite. Women like you are temporary distractions—trophies of convenience to prove some twisted moral point to people like Richard Sterling.”

Elena listened to the rant without a single flicker of emotion on her face. The restrained anger she felt was channeled into absolute, unbreakable clarity. When Julianne finally paused for breath, Elena leaned forward, resting her arms on the table.

“You still don't understand anything, do you, Julianne?” Elena said, her voice dropping into a quiet, chilling register that forced the socialite to lean back in self-defense. “Your entire existence is built on the fear that someone might look past your designer clothes and diamond jewelry and realize there is nothing underneath. You think power comes from keeping people down, from treating service staff like furniture, and from manipulating corporate investors through gossip.”

Julianne’s face flushed crimson with rage. “You insolent little—”

“Listen to me very carefully,” Elena interrupted, her tone absolute and unyielding. “I saved Mrs. Vance’s life because human life is precious, not because I wanted a reward. I earned my job at Vance Development because I am smarter, more capable, and infinitely more grounded than you will ever be. Arthur Vance respects competence and integrity—two things your social circle knows nothing about. If you ever try to undermine my work or my life again, I won't just ignore you. I will make sure the entire city sees exactly how hollow your precious social standing really is.”

The sheer force of Elena’s conviction stunned Julianne into absolute silence. The socialite opened her mouth to retort, but no words came out. The terror of exposure—of public humiliation before her peers—flashed in Julianne’s eyes.

Elena stood up smoothly from the booth, smoothing the fabric of her black dress. She looked down at Julianne with quiet pity, the ultimate defeat for a woman whose entire life was driven by superiority.

“Have a good evening, Julianne,” Elena said softly. She turned and walked out of the Zenith Hotel lounge without looking back once.
