Chapter 2

The cold night air nipped at Arthur’s hands as he sat hunched on the brick ledge outside the glowing donut shop. The heavy glass door swung open once more, and a man in a beige button-down shirt and a gray apron stepped out onto the sidewalk. He held a cardboard box tied with string, a brown paper bag, and a cold plastic bottle of water. This was the kind worker who had watched the brief exchange through the kitchen pass-through window, his eyes catching the silent defeat in Arthur’s posture before the old man could retreat into the shadows.
Stepping carefully over a cracked slab of concrete, the kind worker stopped right in front of Arthur. He crouched down slightly to meet the old man’s tired gaze, bridging the invisible gap that society usually placed between those with homes and those without. He extended the provisions toward Arthur with both hands, offering them not as charity thrown from a height, but as an offering from one human being to another. His voice was steady and warm, cutting through the hum of traffic and the cold breeze. “Please take these. Everyone deserves a little kindness.”
Arthur looked down at the box of donuts, the bagged sandwich, and the bottled water, his breath hitching slightly in his throat. He looked up into the worker's eyes, searching for pity and finding only genuine respect. A slow, trembling smile broke across Arthur’s weathered face, softening the deep lines around his mouth and eyes. He reached out with trembling, dirt-smudged fingers to accept the food, murmuring a heartfelt thank you that barely registered above the city noise.

As Arthur set the package down beside him on the ledge, an inexplicable phenomenon occurred on the street corner just a few feet away. A brilliant, glowing golden halo materialized in the air, casting a warm, celestial amber light over the pavement, defying the harsh fluorescent glare of the streetlights. Pedestrians froze in their tracks, turning their heads in stunned silence as the ordinary asphalt seemed to shimmer and transform under an unearthly radiance.
The worker gasped softly, stumbling back half a step while keeping his eyes fixed on the impossible light. Arthur turned his head toward the glow, his expression shifting from surprise to a profound, timeless recognition, as if he were witnessing the return of an old, deeply cherished friend. The golden light intensified, warming the chilly air and drawing every eye on the crowded sidewalk toward the miraculous spectacle unfolding before them.
