Chapter 8: The Financial Chokehold

The reality of their situation hit home by Monday afternoon. Jacob sat at the small mahogany desk in the hotel suite, his laptop open to his bank accounts. As he expected, the primary joint accounts, managed through the Sterling Family Trust, had been frozen. A brief notification from the bank stated that "administrative adjustments" required authorization from the primary trustee—Evelyn Sterling.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a familiar tension headache building behind his eyes. He had anticipated retaliation, but not this swift and comprehensive economic blockade. Evelyn was cutting off their oxygen supply, expecting them to crawl back begging for mercy within forty-eight hours.

Megan was sitting on the edge of the bed, helping Leo build a fortress out of pillows. The boy was still quiet, his movements tentative, but the color had returned to his cheeks, and the terrifying rattle in his chest had subsided under the antibiotics Dr. Vance had prescribed.

"Is the bank giving you trouble?" Megan asked quietly, not wanting to alarm Leo, who was absorbed in placing a plastic knight atop a pillow tower.

Jacob turned the laptop slightly away from the bed and nodded. "She's frozen the trust accounts. All of them. Even my personal salary deposits are being routed through the family holding corporation for 'tax auditing purposes'."

Megan’s expression tightened, though she didn't panic. She stood up, walking over to place a comforting hand on Jacob’s shoulder. "We have our emergency savings from my freelance accounts. It's not much, but it will cover the hotel and groceries for a few weeks."

"That's not the point, Megan. She's weaponizing our livelihood to force our compliance. It’s what she’s done her entire life—control through dependence." Jacob looked down at his phone, which had remained mercifully silent since Sunday night. "I need to go into the office. I need to secure my client files and speak with managing partners before Evelyn tries to poison the well there as well."

"Be careful, Jake," Megan warned, her eyes filled with concern. "If she controls the family trust, there's no telling who she's influenced at the firm."

The Sterling & Vance Law Firm occupied the top three floors of a sleek glass skyscraper in downtown Chicago. As Jacob rode the private elevator up to the executive suite, he adjusted his gray suit jacket, trying to project an air of unshakable confidence. The polished chrome doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing the minimalist white marble reception desk where receptionist Chloe usually greeted visitors with a bright smile.

Today, Chloe looked up from her computer screen with an expression that was distinctly guarded.
