Chapter 12: The Confrontation at Sunset

Three days later, the legal counteroffensive struck with the precision of a well-planned campaign. Marcus Vance’s firm filed emergency injunctions in both the family court and the civil district court, demanding the immediate unfreezing of assets and subpoenaing the internal communications between Evelyn Sterling and the managing partners at Sterling & Vance Law Firm.

Jacob and Megan were sitting in the hotel suite when Marcus called with an update.

"The judge granted the injunction on the financial accounts," Marcus said over the phone, his tone triumphant. "You should have access to your personal funds by tomorrow morning. Furthermore, the district attorney's office has formally issued a warrant for Evelyn Sterling’s arrest on charges of domestic battery and child abuse."

The words hung in the air with monumental gravity. An arrest warrant for Evelyn Sterling—a woman who had spent her entire life cultivating an untouchable image of high-society perfection.

"Is she... do they know where she is?" Jacob asked, his voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in his veins.

"Police are executing the warrant at the estate right now," Marcus replied. "I suggest you stay put. It's going to get messy."

As if summoned by the conversation, the afternoon sunlight filtering through the hotel window suddenly dimmed as thick, grey clouds rolled in from the lake, promising an autumn storm. Leo was asleep on the sofa, exhausted from a morning of occupational therapy designed to help him process his trauma.

Megan walked over to the window, looking out over the Chicago skyline. "Do you think she'll realize what she's done, Jake? Do you think she feels any remorse?"

Jacob stood beside her, wrapping an arm around her waist. He thought of his mother standing in the doorway of the guest room, holding her black handbag with its American flag pin, speaking with chilling detachment about discipline and control.

"No, Megan," Jacob said softly. "People like my mother don't feel remorse. They only feel the sting of losing control."

Later that evening, local news broadcasts picked up the story. The headline flashed across the lobby television screen: Prominent Society Matron Arrested on Child Abuse Charges. Footage showed two police cruisers parked outside the wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate, and a brief glimpse of Evelyn being escorted down the steps. She wore her beige satin dress, her posture as rigid as ever, her face shielded from the cameras by the dark leather handbag held protectively in front of her. Even in handcuffs, she refused to bow her head.
