Chapter 15

The gymnasium grew utterly still, the lingering smell of dust and gun oil hanging heavy in the cool morning air. Sirens began to wail in the distance outside the perimeter fence—not base security trucks, but the high-pitched, distinctive sirens of the regional military police dispatched directly from headquarters upon receipt of the encrypted intelligence packet.
Master Sergeant Vance kept his weight pinned firmly across the back of the second contractor, who lay motionless against the concrete floor, breathing heavily in defeat. Coach Miller stood in the center of the blue fighting mat, his hands still wrapped in white tape, his chest rising and falling in slow, controlled cycles as he stared down at Captain Hayes.
Hayes’s hand slowly dropped away from his holster. His shoulders slumped forward, the arrogant authority that had defined his command evaporating into a crushing, irrevocable realization. He looked at Elena, who stood beside the open laptop with her hands relaxed at her sides, her expression entirely devoid of triumph or malice. She simply looked at him the way an analyst looked at a completed puzzle—every piece locked into its proper, immutable place.
Heavy boots echoed down the hallway outside, followed by the crisp, authoritative commands of military police officers entering the auxiliary wing. Within moments, the doorway filled with armed officers wearing crisp uniforms and carrying standard-issue sidearms.
“Captain Hayes,” the lead investigator said, stepping into the gym with an official arrest warrant extended in his hand. “You are relieved of duty under suspicion of treason, logistics embezzlement, and unauthorized destruction of government property.”
Hayes didn't offer a word in defense. He allowed the officers to secure his wrists behind his back without a struggle, his eyes cast downward toward the polished concrete floor as he was led out of the gymnasium into the bright, unyielding desert sunlight.
Vance released the contractor on the floor, stepping back to let the military police take custody of both men. He walked slowly over to the blue mat, standing beside Miller and Elena as the heavy doors swung shut behind the departing detail.
The gymnasium returned to its quiet, echoing emptiness. The morning light now poured fully through the high windows, bathing the blue fighting mat and its red trim in a clean, brilliant illumination.

Miller untied his fighting gloves, letting them drop onto the bench with a dull thud. He looked at Elena, a genuine, respectful nod passing between them without a word spoken aloud.
Elena reached down, closed the lid of her laptop, and secured the encrypted thumb drive in her tactical pocket. The air felt lighter now, stripped of secrets and shadows. She turned toward the exit, her posture balanced, her breathing steady, ready to walk out into whatever terrain lay ahead.
