Chapter 11

The crunch of heavy boots on gravel shattered the silence of the loading yard. A harsh beam from a high-intensity tactical flashlight swept across the side of Warehouse Three, missing Elena by less than ten feet as she flattened herself against the corrugated metal wall of an adjacent storage container.
“Someone was at the terminal!” a voice shouted from the loading dock, carrying the rough, urgent edge of an enlisted security guard acting on direct orders. “Check the perimeter fence! Nobody leaves the sector without verification!”
Elena kept her breathing shallow and steady, her muscles coiled like springs. She couldn't run toward the main gate; the searchlights sweeping the perimeter road would pick her up instantly. Her only viable escape route led back toward the industrial drainage culverts that ran beneath the base’s outer fence line—a narrow, concrete-lined pipe that she had scouted during her initial map review of the compound.
She slipped away from the container, moving with low, ghost-like efficiency through the maze of stacked shipping crates. Behind her, the sharp bark of guard dogs and the rhythmic shouts of security personnel ricocheted off the metal walls.
As she reached the perimeter fence near the old maintenance shed, a security patrol vehicle rounded the corner, its high beams cutting a blinding swath across the open ground directly between her and the drainage culvert.
Elena dropped to her stomach, crawling beneath a low wooden pallet loaded with empty fuel drums just as the vehicle’s tires crunched to a halt a few yards away. The smell of hot rubber and exhaust filled the air.
“Clear this sector!” the driver ordered, stepping down from the truck with a heavy tactical shotgun cradled in his arms.
Elena slid her hand into her pocket, her fingers brushing the encrypted thumb drive resting securely against the casing. The data she had pulled contained every single transaction log linking Captain Hayes to the missing cryptographic shipments. It was the key to exposing the entire operation, but it was useless if she got caught hiding under a wooden pallet in the middle of an active security sweep.
The guard’s boots crunched on the gravel closer and closer. He stopped right beside the pallet, his flashlight beam sweeping underneath the wooden slats, missing her face by mere inches as she pressed her forehead flat against the cold dirt.
For three agonizing seconds, time seemed to stand entirely still. Then, a radio on the guard’s shoulder crackled to life with a static-heavy dispatch call from the main gate.
“Sector 4 patrol, report to the administrative block. We’ve got an incoming vehicle check requiring immediate verification.”

The guard grunted, cursed under his breath, and turned away from the pallet, jogging back toward his vehicle. The engine roared to life, and the truck sped off toward the administration zone.
Elena waited until the taillights faded into the distance before crawling out from beneath the pallet and slipping silently into the dark maw of the drainage culvert.
