Chapter 8: The Visitors at the Gate

The heavy iron gates of the estate groaned in protest as they swung open, admitting a sleek, unmarked black sedan that rolled silently up the crushed-stone driveway. From her vantage point on the second-floor landing, Claire watched the vehicle approach with a sickening lurch in her stomach. She recognized the car immediately—it belonged to Superintendent Ramos, a man whose official title as head of municipal investigations masked a career built on looking the other way for the right price. The violence of two nights ago had not gone unnoticed by the local authorities, and the bill for their silence was finally arriving.
Downstairs, the front door opened before the bell could even ring. Julian stood in the foyer, having anticipated the visit with chilling precision. He wore a crisp gray suit, his expression completely unreadable as Superintendent Ramos stepped into the grand hall, accompanied by two silent officers in plainclothes. Ramos was a stout man in his late fifties with sharp eyes that missed nothing. He paused, taking in the pristine marble floors where Vance’s body had recently lain, before fixing his gaze on Julian. ""Quiet morning for an estate, Mr. Vance—pardon me, Mr. Sterling,"" Ramos said smoothly, correcting himself with a knowing smirk.

Julian did not flinch. He gestured toward the formal receiving room, maintaining an air of impeccable hospitality. ""Superintendent. We were expecting you, though perhaps not quite this early,"" Julian replied, his voice steady and calm. They moved into the room, where Eleanor was already seated by the fireplace, her posture rigid and commanding. Ramos took a seat uninvited, placing his hat on the mahogany coffee table right beside a copy of the five point four million peso financial document, which Julian had deliberately left exposed to signal that they were playing with open cards.
""We received an anonymous call regarding a disturbance and a missing person—a man named Vance who apparently had significant financial ties to this household,"" Ramos stated, leaning back and crossing his legs. He looked from Eleanor to Julian, measuring their reactions. ""A man doesn't simply vanish after entering a gated property with five point four million pesos in play. The paperwork tends to linger, Mr. Sterling."" Julian offered a thin, polite smile. ""Vance left of his own accord through the rear service gate after our meeting concluded, Superintendent. Any rumors of violence are the product of imaginative neighbors."" Ramos smiled thinly back, knowing the game well. ""Imagination is an expensive commodity these days, Julian. It usually costs about five point four million to keep it quiet.""
