Chapter 6: The Shadows in the Hallway

Midnight settled over the sprawling estate like a heavy woolen blanket, suffocating and dark. In the upstairs nursery, the twin girls finally slept deeply, their exhaustion having finally overpowered their terror. Claire stood beside their small beds, using a warm, damp cloth to gently wipe the dried blood from their cheeks and hands. Every movement was agonizingly slow and deliberate, as if any sudden noise might shatter the fragile peace of the room. Her red silk dress, now stained dark and stiff in the fabric folds, remained unwashed; she could not bring herself to take it off, feeling as though removing the evidence of the crime would somehow make it real in a way she wasn't ready to face.

Downstairs, the dining hall had been cleared of the shattered porcelain, but the ghost of the evening lingered in the air. Eleanor sat in her private study adjacent to the library, a single desk lamp casting long, dramatic shadows across her face. Spread before her were the family ledgers—thick, leather-bound volumes detailing decades of wealth, investments, and hidden liabilities. The five point four million peso document lay prominently in the center of the desk, a cancerous growth threatening to consume the entire archive. She traced the embossed seal with her thumb, her mind calculating the liquidation value of their remaining properties.

A soft knock at the door preceded Julian’s entry. He had removed his suit jacket, but his white shirt and black bow tie remained impeccably neat. He did not wait for an invitation, stepping into the dimly lit room with the easy confidence of a man who believed he owned the very floorboards beneath his feet. ""You are looking in the wrong place, Eleanor,"" Julian said quietly, pausing beside the mahogany bookshelf. ""Trying to balance the books by selling off the rural estates will only buy us six months. The market has shifted, and liquidity is everything.""

Eleanor did not look up from her ledgers. ""You speak of liquidity as if it were air, Julian, while you leave bodies in my foyer and debt collectors at my door,"" she replied, her voice cold as winter ice. ""You have placed a noose around all our necks. Do not mistake my silence for partnership; I am merely deciding whether to pull the lever myself or let you hang slowly."" Julian chuckled softly, a sound devoid of genuine humor. He stepped closer to the desk, leaning down slightly to meet the matriarch’s stern gaze head-on. ""We are bound together now, Eleanor. If I fall, Claire and the girls lose everything—not just their status, but their shelter, their security, and their future. You won't let that happen.""
