Chapter 8: The Shadow of the Estate

While Julian and Elena sought safety within the sterile walls of the county hospital, Beatrice Vance sat in a holding cell at the downtown precinct, staring at the gray cinderblock wall opposite her. The heavy silk of her evening gown was wrinkled, the sparkling diamond necklace feeling uncomfortably heavy against her collarbone. Her fingers, stripped of their rings during the booking process, tapped a frantic, rhythmic beat against her knee.
For the first time in sixty years, Beatrice was stripped of her leverage. Her phone had been confiscated; her lawyers had not yet managed to bypass the weekend magistrate’s emergency lockdown protocols; and, most disturbingly, her son had not called to arrange her release.
A young female detective named Sergeant Miller walked into the interrogation room, carrying a thick manila folder containing the police report, the photographs from the kitchen, and the preliminary statements given by Julian and Elena. She sat down across the stainless-steel table, opening the folder with a deliberate, unhurried motion.
""Mrs. Vance,"" Sergeant Miller said, her voice flat and professional, carrying no trace of the deference Beatrice was accustomed to receiving from everyone in her orbit. ""You’ve been charged with second-degree domestic assault, child endangerment, and willful violation of emergency protective statutes.""
Beatrice straightened her spine, attempting to summon the haughty authority that usually cowed subordinates and service workers alike. ""This is an outrageous misunderstanding. That girl is unstable. She ruined my grandson's birthday party, created a hysterical scene, and manipulated my son into a temporary fit of panic. I demand to speak to my legal counsel immediately, and I expect you to contact Julian so he can clear this up.""
Sergeant Miller didn't flinch. She slid a single photograph across the table—a close-up of Elena’s bruised cheekbone and scraped jawline, captured under the bright emergency room lights.
""Your son is the one who called us, Mrs. Vance,"" Sergeant Miller stated quietly, letting the words hang in the air like a physical blow. ""He’s the one who gave us your exact words when you blocked the kitchen exit. He’s the one who stated that your abuse of his wife and your threats toward his child have been going on for far too long.""

Beatrice stared at the photograph, her breath hitching. A flicker of genuine panic crossed her face before her habitual armor slammed back down. ""He is confused. He doesn't understand the sacrifices I've made to build our family name, to protect our assets, to ensure that boy grows up with discipline and standards instead of weakness.""
""Discipline doesn't leave handprints and bruises,"" Sergeant Miller replied coldly, closing the folder with a sharp snap. ""Your son has chosen his family. You're going to spend the weekend in holding, and on Monday morning, a judge will decide the terms of your arraignment. No amount of money is going to wipe this slate clean.""
