Chapter 11: The Confrontation at the Office

While Julian and his legal team were mapping out their strategy downtown, Beatrice Vance was sitting in a high-backed leather chair in her primary attorney’s office, her face a mask of cold fury. She had been released on bond late Sunday evening, her formidable legal team working around the clock to secure her temporary freedom. But freedom without control was meaningless to her.
""What do you mean, the restraining order cannot be dissolved?"" Beatrice snapped, leaning forward across the mahogany desk. Her voice was sharp, cutting through the quiet office with aristocratic disdain. ""My son is confused. He has been influenced by an opportunistic woman who cares nothing for our family legacy. I demand that you file an immediate motion to compel his appearance so I can straighten this out.""
Arthur Pendelton, a seasoned defense attorney who had represented Beatrice in numerous property disputes and corporate negotiations over the past thirty years, sighed and adjusted his glasses. He looked tired. ""Mrs. Vance, you are not listening to me. This is no longer a civil dispute over property management or family rules. This is a criminal matter involving physical violence and child endangerment. The district attorney has photographs of the victim's injuries. The police officers who responded to the scene filed independent statements corroborating the account.""
""Photographs can be staged!"" Beatrice hissed, slamming her manicured hand onto the desk. ""The girl fell. She is clumsy, hysterical, and ungrateful. Julian knows that. He is simply having a childish tantrum because I expected him to adhere to a schedule for his own son's party.""
Pendelton leaned back, folding his hands over his stomach. He had served Beatrice well, but he was smart enough to recognize a sinking ship when he saw one. ""The court will not view a bruised cheekbone and a child’s crying fit as a staged event, Beatrice. Furthermore, Julian’s legal team has already filed an emergency injunction to freeze the subsidiary trust accounts you control. Your financial leverage over your son is gone.""
Beatrice froze. The color drained slightly from her face, leaving her stark against the dark wood of the office. For all her bluster about family legacy and moral authority, her entire empire was built on liquidity, property control, and absolute financial dominance. The thought that Julian—her obedient, compliant son—had actively authorized his lawyers to cut off her access was an existential betrayal.

""He wouldn't dare,"" she whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerous, chilling register. ""He has no spine without me. I made him everything he is.""
""He had a spine last night when he called the police,"" Pendelton replied quietly, standing up to signal the end of the meeting. ""And based on the preliminary filings, he has decided to build a life where you have no place. I suggest you prepare for an arraignment, Mrs. Vance. Because if you violate that protective order by so much as a phone call, I won't be able to keep you out of jail.""
