Chapter 8: Pursuit in the Canyon

The black sedan cut aggressively through the midday downtown traffic, its powerful engine roaring as it wove between sluggish delivery trucks and crowded taxis. David sat in the back seat, staring intensely at the encrypted mobile terminal on his lap. The progress bar for the server migration flickered at eighty-four percent. Twelve more minutes. Just twelve more minutes until the data was safely out of domestic reach.

Beside him, Elena monitored the GPS tracker they had secretly planted in Rachel’s vehicle three months prior. "She’s taking Constitution Avenue," Elena reported, her fingers tapping rapidly on her tablet screen. "She’s less than four blocks away from the federal courthouse. If her driver takes the underground bypass, we’ll lose our window to intercept her before she enters the lobby."

"Tell the driver to take the alley shortcut on Fourth Street," David commanded, his voice tight with restrained panic. "We can cut her off at the plaza entrance."

The sedan jerked violently as the driver whipped the steering wheel hard to the right, plunging the luxury vehicle into the narrow, shadow-drenched alleyway behind the historic municipal buildings. Dumpsters and brick walls blurred past the tinted windows. David adjusted his thin-framed glasses, his heart hammering against his ribs in a rare display of raw, unfiltered adrenaline. For all his careful planning, he had never anticipated being reduced to street-level tactics just to protect his empire.

The car burst out of the alleyway and skidded to a halt near the grand stone steps of the federal courthouse. Towering marble pillars rose up toward the gray sky, framing the heavy bronze doors where federal marshals stood guard. Just fifty yards away, Rachel’s black town car had pulled up to the curb.

Before the car came to a complete stop, David pushed the door open and stepped out onto the damp pavement. The autumn wind caught the hem of his black suit jacket, snapping it against his thigh. He looked up the imposing stone steps and saw Rachel stepping out of her vehicle, her white wool coat billowing slightly. True to form, she carried the small white fluffy dog securely tucked under her arm, its white fur standing out sharply against the somber backdrop of the courthouse architecture.

David broke into a fast, purposeful walk across the plaza, ignoring the startled glances of pedestrians. Elena followed close behind him, her heels clicking a staccato rhythm against the concrete.

"Rachel!" David called out, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient noise of city traffic.

Rachel stopped midway up the stone steps. She turned slowly, looking down at David with an expression of cold, unyielding resolve. She did not look surprised to see him; she had anticipated this desperate attempt from the very beginning.
