Chapter 14: The Departure Gate

The private aviation terminal at the municipal airport was quiet, bathed in the sterile, fluorescent glow of early morning operations. A sleek twin-engine private jet idled on the tarmac outside, its turbines whining softly as they warmed up for the trans-pacific flight. David and Elena walked through the sliding glass doors of the terminal, each carrying a single leather suitcase.

David wore a simple dark wool coat over his white collared shirt, having left his corporate suit jacket behind in the penthouse closet. He had also removed his thin-framed glasses for a moment, wiping the lenses clean with a soft cloth before sliding them back onto his face. Beside him, Elena wore a simple beige trench coat, her long dark hair no longer tied in its severe professional bun, falling loosely past her shoulders in a natural half-up style.

They approached the private customs desk where an agent checked their passports with mechanical efficiency. There were no flags, no red notices, no federal marshals waiting to intercept them. Elder Lin’s emergency proxy dissolution had cleared the legal path just hours before the prosecutor could issue an arrest warrant. Legally, they were clean—exiled, stripped of their titles, but free.

As the customs agent stamped their documents and handed them back, David felt a profound, hollow weight lift from his chest. For ten years, he had believed that power and control were the ultimate measures of success. Now, standing in the drafty corridor of a private airport terminal, he realized that true freedom was simply the ability to walk away without looking back.

They walked out onto the tarmac, the sharp morning wind whipping across the open runway. The metal stairs of the private jet waited for them, its open cabin door glowing with a warm, inviting light. Before climbing the steps, David paused for a fraction of a second, looking back toward the distant skyline of the city where the gleaming towers of Lin Enterprises pierced the clouds.

Elena stopped beside him, placing a hand lightly on his arm. She didn't say a word; she didn't need to. They both knew that the empire they had sacrificed so much to protect was now someone else’s burden.
