Chapter 6: The Senator’s Shadow

The revelation regarding Senator Sterling added a volatile political dimension to an already explosive family scandal. Julian sat at his mahogany desk late into the night, reviewing public records and campaign disclosures. Senator Thomas Sterling was a rising star in the state legislature, known for his polished rhetoric on family values, child welfare reform, and fiscal responsibility. The irony was so profound it tasted like ash. If the press caught wind that his new bride had been systematically starving and hiding her five-year-old granddaughter in a drafty shed while collecting sixty thousand dollars a year in fraudulent child-support funds, Sterling’s political career would disintegrate overnight.
Marcus entered the study, closing the heavy door securely behind him. "I’ve had a discreet conversation with an old contact at the State Prosecutor’s office. If we present these financial records and Elena’s sworn affidavit, we can secure an immediate freeze on Beatrice’s personal accounts and initiate a criminal investigation for wire fraud and child endangerment."
"And Sterling?" Julian asked, his eyes never leaving the glowing monitor screen.
"Sterling’s campaign manager is already in full damage control mode," Marcus said, leaning against the edge of the desk. "They released a terse statement this afternoon claiming the Senator was entirely unaware of private family matters at the estate and has no comment on ongoing legal disputes. But off the record? Sterling is furious. He feels blindsided. He’s threatening to annul the marriage before the ink on the marriage license is even dry if Beatrice doesn't clean this up immediately."
Julian stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Then we don't wait for a court date. We let her panic first."
"What are you planning?" Marcus asked, eyeing him warily.
"I’m going to pay my dear mother a visit," Julian said calmly. "No lawyers, no police sirens yet. Just a father looking for an accounting."
Thirty minutes later, Julian’s town car pulled through the wrought-iron gates of the grand estate. The wedding decorations had been hastily dismantled; floral arrangements lay tossed in industrial bins near the service entrance, and the massive wedding cake was gone, leaving only empty folding tables behind. The eerie silence of the sprawling mansion underscored the swiftness with which Beatrice’s fragile empire was collapsing.
Julian walked up the grand front steps and pressed the heavy brass doorbell. A flustered butler answered, his eyes wide with apprehension. Before the man could speak, Julian pushed past him into the marble foyer.

"Tell my mother her son is here," Julian said, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling.
