Chapter 5

The executive boardroom on the twelfth floor of Lumina Medical Center offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, but the heavy mahogany blinds were drawn shut, plunging the room into a dim, amber-tinted twilight. In the center of the room sat a massive teak conference table surrounded by twelve leather chairs. Only two of them were occupied.

Arthur sat at the far end of the table, his tie loosened slightly, staring down at a thick manila folder resting on the polished wood. Across from him sat Victoria Sterling, the senior legal counsel for the hospital network, her graying hair cut into a sharp bob that matched the ruthless efficiency of her reputation.

"I don't care about your domestic disputes with Rachel, Arthur," Victoria said, sliding a set of financial statements across the table. Her voice was like dry leaves scraping over pavement. "What I care about is that our primary funding partner from Chicago is threatening to pull twenty million dollars in capital because your signature is missing from the liability waiver for the neurological trials."

"My signature isn't missing; it was delayed," Arthur said, rubbing his temples where a dull, persistent migraine was beginning to form. "Circumstances... outside the office have required my immediate attention."

"Circumstances don't freeze corporate mergers, Arthur. Negligence does," Victoria countered, leaning forward, her sharp eyes narrowing behind designer frames. "Rachel has been handling the clinical side of the trial with exemplary precision. In fact, if it weren't for her recent addendums to the safety protocols, the board would have been completely blind to the compliance violations happening in the third-floor labs."

Arthur stopped rubbing his temples. His hand dropped slowly to the table. "What addendums?"

Victoria raised an eyebrow, looking genuinely surprised. "You didn't know? Rachel filed an internal audit report yesterday morning detailing unauthorized access to the experimental drug storage units. Access that traces directly back to your administrative credentials, Arthur."

The room seemed to shrink around him. The air grew heavy, smelling faintly of old paper and ozone. "That's impossible," Arthur said, though the words lacked conviction. "I haven't accessed the third-floor storage in six months."

"The digital logs disagree with you," Victoria said flatly, opening another file and turning it toward him. "Every entry, every timestamp, every authorization code matches your private key. The board is meeting tomorrow morning to review the findings. Unless you can prove someone else had your credentials—or your physical security token—you’re looking at an immediate suspension pending a federal fraud investigation."

Arthur stared at the glowing blue timestamp on the printed digital log: 11:42 PM. User ID: Vance_A_Admin.

He hadn't been at the hospital at 11:42 PM yesterday. He had been at home, asleep in his bed—or so he had thought. A cold wave of realization washed over him. Rachel hadn't just intercepted him at the atrium; she had spent months systematically building a digital cage around him, using his own administrative privileges to construct a narrative of corporate embezzlement and medical tampering.

"She set me up," Arthur whispered, the reality finally taking root in his mind.

"Who set you up?" Victoria asked, her voice turning icy. "If you are implying that Dr. Vance had anything to do with your administrative discrepancies, you better have hard evidence, because right now, the only person whose signature is on the audit trail is yours."

Arthur stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. He grabbed his suit jacket from the back of the chair. "I need to find her."

"If you leave this room before we finish reviewing these terms, Arthur, there won't be a hospital left for you to return to," Victoria warned, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.

Arthur didn't answer. He turned on his heel and strode toward the heavy glass doors of the boardroom, leaving the legal counsel and the incriminating manila folder behind in the dim amber light.
