Chapter 13

The federal grand jury chambers on the fourth floor of the district courthouse were designed to intimidate. The high ceilings, dark oak paneling, and tiered seating created an atmosphere of solemn, unyielding authority. The air was cool, smelling faintly of old books and polished wood.
In the center of the room stood the witness stand, flanked by a court reporter whose fingers hovered nervously over a stenotype machine.
Rachel walked down the center aisle, her blue wool coat buttoned to the collar, her blonde hair pulled back into its sharp, familiar knot. She didn't look at the press gallery packed with reporters murmuring behind the glass partition. She didn't look at the defense attorneys whispering frantically among themselves near the back tables. She kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, ascending the three wooden steps to the witness stand and sitting down with absolute, unshakeable composure.
At the prosecutor’s table stood Agent Marcus Vance, alongside the Deputy Attorney General.
"Dr. Rachel Sterling," the presiding judge, a stern-faced woman with iron-gray hair, addressed her from the elevated bench. "You have been called before this grand jury to testify regarding the financial and clinical audit trails of Lumina Medical Center and associated federal healthcare programs. Do you understand the nature of these proceedings?"
"I do, Your Honor," Rachel said, her voice clear, steady, and carrying effortlessly across the silent room.
