Chapter 10: The Financial Audit

While Arthur focused on the emotional recovery of his children, the legal and financial realities of dismantling his marriage required a cold, analytical approach. Back at the extended-stay suite, after Leo and Lily had fallen asleep in the adjoining bedroom, Arthur sat at the dining table with a forensic accountant named Marcus Vance—a cousin on their extended side who specialized in uncovering hidden assets and corporate financial fraud. The dining table was covered in bank statements, tax returns, mortgage documents, and investment portfolios dating back nearly a decade.

Marcus pushed his glasses up his nose, tracing a line of figures on a ledger sheet with a yellow highlighter. "Artie, you need to see this," he said, his tone grim and professional. "Clara wasn't just managing the household budget with an iron fist. She was quietly siphoning funds from your joint savings accounts into a separate, undisclosed LLC registered in her maiden name."

Arthur frowned, leaning over the papers. "An LLC? For what purpose? We didn't own any secondary properties or side businesses together."

"Not openly, you didn't," Marcus replied, tapping a specific wire transfer receipt. "Over the past three years, she diverted nearly two hundred thousand dollars into this shell corporation. Furthermore, she took out a second mortgage on the suburban house six months ago without your knowledge or signature, forging your initials on the closing documents with an impressive degree of forgery."

Arthur felt a cold chill run down his spine. The realization that the woman he had shared a bed with for ten years was simultaneously executing a calculated financial betrayal was staggering. It wasn't just emotional cruelty and domestic tyranny; it was premeditated financial sabotage designed to leave him vulnerable if he ever tried to walk away.

"Can we trace where the money went?" Arthur asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, focused register.

"Already on it," Marcus said, clicking a few keys on his laptop. "Most of it was funneled into high-risk offshore accounts and luxury cryptocurrency wallets that are notoriously difficult to freeze, but her legal counsel made a fatal mistake. She used a portion of those funds to retain her defense team, which links the illicit assets directly to her criminal proceedings. We can motion the court to freeze all corporate and personal accounts immediately, preventing her from liquidating any remaining marital property."

Arthur leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples as the sheer scale of Clara’s deception came into sharp focus. She hadn't just been a tyrannical mother; she had been running a covert operation within their marriage, treating him as an ATM and the children as collateral damage.

"Do it, Marcus," Arthur said firmly. "Freeze everything. Let’s make sure she doesn't have a single dollar left to fund her defense when this goes to trial."

Marcus nodded, his expression grim. "Consider it done, Artie. We're going to strip away every layer of insulation she built for herself."
