Chapter 1: The Glass Shard

The front hallway of the suburban colonial home smelled faintly of worn leather, floor wax, and impending catastrophe. Arthur stood frozen on the threshold of the gleaming living room, the weight of his leather briefcase suddenly pulling heavily against his tailored grey suit trousers. Just moments before, he had pushed open the heavy double wooden doors expecting the quiet, predictable sanctuary of an evening after a brutal week at the corporate tax firm. Instead, he found a scene that defied the calm domestic exterior of their lives. A wide, jagged puddle of white milk soaked into the expensive Persian rug near the baseboard, resembling a map of some frozen, hostile country. Beside it, six-year-old Leo sat cross-legged in his green corduroy overalls, sobbing openly, his small shoulders shaking with a raw, unfiltered grief that tore at Arthur’s chest.
A few inches away, little Lily clutched a damp kitchen cloth, her brown hair falling across her face as she looked up with absolute terror in her eyes. She wore her favorite light blue cardigan, now stained at the hem with the white liquid. Standing directly behind the children was Clara, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe, immaculate chignon that matched the rigid line of her beige blouse and pressed trousers. Her arms remained tightly crossed over her chest, her expression carved from stone. Clara had always prided herself on structure, on teaching the children that actions carried absolute consequences, but the sheer coldness radiating from her posture felt entirely alien to Arthur.
"Please Mommy, punish me, I'm sorry!" Lily’s voice cracked through the stifling air, carrying a weight of fear that no child should ever possess over a simple household accident. Arthur felt the blood drain from his face. He stepped fully into the room, the heavy oak doors clicking shut behind him with a finality that made Leo flinch.
"What is going on here?" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes darted from the milk puddle to his wife’s unyielding face. Clara didn't blink. She uncrossed her arms slowly, smoothing down the front of her trousers with deliberate, mocking calmness.
"Calm down, honey. It's just a little discipline," Clara replied, her tone smooth and devoid of maternal warmth. Arthur knelt instinctively, ignoring the sharp pain in his knees as he reached out toward Lily. The little girl shrank back for a fraction of a second before lunging forward to grab his lapel.
"Daddy, please check the cameras!" she whispered frantically, her tiny fingers trembling against his white dress shirt. Arthur frowned, his confusion deepening. Clara’s face flickered—just for a microsecond—with something resembling genuine panic before she masked it behind her usual mask of chilling superiority. Arthur pulled his smartphone from his coat pocket, his thumb swiping blindly until he tapped the icon for the home security network. The live feed loaded with a sickening slowness, displaying the kitchen and living room angles from three hours earlier. What he saw on that glowing five-inch screen made the room spin violently around him. Clara hadn't just watched an accident; she had deliberately shoved Leo toward the table, causing the glass of milk to shatter, and then forced Lily to kneel in the wreckage while screaming at them both for breathing too loudly. Arthur looked up, his initial shock hardening into a terrifying, righteous fury.

"Discipline? You're going straight to prison!" Arthur snarled, his voice trembling not with hesitation, but with the terrifying realization of what monster lived under their roof.
