Chapter 10: The Aftermath of Truth

The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 4B swung shut behind them, sealing away the tension of the legal battle. Julian, Clara, and Marcus stepped back out into the bright, airy lobby of the courthouse. The morning sunlight was streaming through the massive glass atrium, casting long, clean lines across the polished marble floor.

Julian let out a long breath—a breath he felt he had been holding for days. The constant tightness in his chest finally dissolved, replaced by a profound, grounding sense of relief. He turned to Clara, pulling her into a gentle, embracing hug. Clara buried her face in his shoulder, her shoulders shaking with quiet, exhausted relief as the emotional toll of the past week finally caught up with her.

""We did it,"" Julian whispered into her hair. ""We’re safe. The house is secure.""

Marcus stood nearby, smiling warmly as he watched them. He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and slipped his hands into the pockets of his faded cardigan. ""Don't celebrate quite yet, kids. Vance is gone, but Evelyn is still out there. She’s going to realize what happened the moment Vance fails to answer her calls.""

Julian pulled back slightly, looking at his uncle with a hardened expression. ""Let her come. She doesn't have Vance to shield her fraudulent schemes anymore. If she wants a legal battle without a corrupt lawyer backing her, she’ll find out very quickly that she has no ground to stand on.""

""What about the fifteen thousand dollars she withdrew from our personal account?"" Clara asked, wiping away a stray tear from her cheek.

""Marcus already filed an emergency injunction with the state banking commissioner,"" Julian replied, looking at his uncle for confirmation.

Marcus nodded. ""The funds have been frozen in the offshore holding account pending criminal forfeiture proceedings. You’ll have every penny back within a week, along with court-mandated restitution from Vance’s retained firm assets.""

They walked out of the courthouse together down the grand stone steps, breathing in the crisp autumn air. The sense of victory was sweet, but Julian knew that life didn't instantly return to normal just because a corrupt lawyer was behind bars. There was still a family fracture to deal with—a fracture caused by a mother whose greed had ultimately destroyed her relationship with her only son.

As they reached the car, Julian’s phone buzzed in his coat pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a bank notification or a message from Marcus’s legal contacts. Instead, it was an unknown number with a local area code. He slid his thumb across the screen and answered.

""Julian,"" a voice whispered from the other end. It was Evelyn. Her usual haughty, confident tone was completely gone, replaced by a fragile, frantic tremor. ""Arthur isn't answering his phone. The firm's receptionist said the marshals were there. Tell me it's not true.""

Julian stood still beside the car door, his voice steady, calm, and stripped of all anger. ""It’s true, Mother. Vance has been detained for fraud and perjury. And your scheme to steal our home is completely over.""

A heavy silence stretched across the phone line, broken only by the sound of ragged breathing. Then, the call disconnected with a sharp click. Julian lowered the phone slowly, staring at the black screen for a moment before sliding it back into his pocket. He didn't feel hatred or triumph; he only felt a profound, quiet sorrow for a woman who had chosen greed over family and lost everything in the process.
