Chapter 1: The Kitchen Threshold

The modern bright kitchen hummed with a quiet tension before the chaos broke. Julian stood just past the threshold, his black long-sleeve athletic shirt and dark pants pulled taut as his muscles locked in sudden fury. His short brown hair was slightly damp from the morning run, but his focus was entirely on the scene unfolding across the polished white tiles.
On the floor, Clara sat huddled in her maroon dress, her arms wrapped tightly around six-month-old Leo, whose frantic cries echoed against the marble countertops. Standing directly over them was Evelyn, her beige pants and light blue denim jacket contrasting sharply with the menacing way she held a feather duster like a weapon. Evelyn’s face bore a cold, unyielding smirk, completely unfazed by the infant's distress or Clara’s trembling frame.
""What the hell are you doing?"" Julian’s voice cracked through the room, loud and ragged with disbelief.
Clara looked up, her dark eyes wide with a mixture of relief and lingering terror. ""Julian, she—she just came in. She demanded the portfolio.""
Evelyn didn't flinch. Instead, she slowly lowered the feather duster, her cold blue eyes shifting lazily toward the enraged young man who had just burst into his own home. ""Someone has to keep this family accountable, Julian. You’re blind to what’s right in front of you.""
Julian’s blood roared in his ears. The papers scattered across the floor—financial records, medical bills, and custody drafts Evelyn had clearly rummaged through—fluttered slightly in the draft from the open door. Every instinct he possessed as a father and a partner flared into a blinding red rage. He took two long, devastating strides forward, closing the distance between them before Evelyn could raise the duster again.
""Don't you ever lay a hand on my family!"" Julian roared, his face contorted in intense anger, eyes wide and teeth bared.
Without pausing to think, Julian lunged. His shoulder struck Evelyn mid-torso, carrying her momentum directly backward until her spine slammed hard against the edge of the kitchen island counter. The impact rattled the fruit bowl and sent a ceramic mug crashing to the floor in a shower of white shards. Evelyn gasped, the wind knocked out of her as the initial shock finally breached her arrogant facade.
Julian didn't give her a second to recover. He swept her legs out, taking them both down to the linoleum floor amidst the sea of scattered papers. Pinning her roughly, his hands closed into tight fists around the lapels of her light blue denim jacket. Evelyn’s panic flared, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as she stared up into a face warped by absolute fury.
""Let go of me! You think you can threaten me?"" Evelyn spat, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound defiant.

Julian leaned in close, his knuckles white as he maintained his grip. His chest heaved with every breath, his raised fist trembling just inches from her face. The high emotional tension in the kitchen hung thick, suffocating every breath. But as Leo’s cries spiked again in the background, Julian’s gaze flickered momentarily to Clara, and the raw, desperate humanity in his partner’s eyes pierced through his rage. He had to pull back, but the war was only beginning.
