Chapter 9: Sanctuary in the Archives

The secure conference room on the fifth floor of the federal building offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, now partially emerging from the clearing rain clouds. The room was sparsely decorated, featuring a long mahogany table, several ergonomic chairs, and a bank of secure computer terminals operated by federal cyber investigators. Lily sat quietly in a corner armchair, coloring with a fresh box of markers Sarah had thoughtfully provided, the pink spiral notebook resting safely on the table beside her.
Mark sat across from Sarah, reviewing the final draft of the public affidavit that would accompany the leaked documents. Every sentence was scrutinized to ensure absolute legal accuracy, removing any room for Elena’s high-priced legal team to claim misrepresentation or defamation.
“This is it,” Sarah murmured, tapping her pen against the printed pages. “Once we file this electronically with the Department of Justice press office, it goes live across every major news network simultaneously. Elena won’t be able to buy an injunction or bury the story with corporate PR statements.”
Mark nodded slowly, feeling a profound sense of exhaustion settle into his bones. The adrenaline rush was finally fading, replaced by the quiet reality of what came next. He would be blacklisted from his industry, his career as a corporate auditor effectively destroyed. But as he looked over at Lily, who was humming softly to herself while drawing a purple butterfly, he knew he had made the only choice that mattered.
The secure door clicked open, and Marshal Thomas stepped inside, holding a secure tablet computer. His expression was serious, devoid of the casual reassurance he had offered earlier in the lobby.
“We just received word from our field team monitoring corporate headquarters,” Thomas announced, his voice clipped and deliberate. “Arthur Pendelton was detained by company security before he could leave the executive floor. They’re claiming he downloaded classified proprietary assets.”
Mark stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back against the carpet. “Arthur? But he helped us! He gave us the server logs!”
“Elena’s legal team moved faster than anticipated,” Thomas explained grimly. “They used an internal compliance loophole to declare an emergency asset freeze, granting security temporary enforcement powers within the building. Arthur is currently being held in a private boardroom on the top floor.”
Sarah stood up beside Mark, her professional instincts instantly kicking into gear. “Can the feds intervene? That’s a clear violation of federal detainment laws if they’re holding him against his will.”

“We’re mobilizing a unit right now,” Thomas replied, tapping his radio clip. “But jurisdiction inside private corporate towers can get legally complicated without a signed warrant from a federal magistrate. We need those logs verified and matched to Arthur’s terminal ID before we can storm the building legally.”
Mark grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair. “Then we match them right now. Let’s get it done.”
