Chapter 7: Courthouse Steps

The neoclassical facade of the federal courthouse rose like a limestone cliff against the stormy sky, its massive pillars dripping with rain. Mark pulled his sedan illegally into a loading zone right in front of the sweeping marble staircase, cutting the engine before it had even finished settling. He threw open his door, rushed around to the passenger side, and unbuckled Lily, scooping her into his arms and pulling her hood up to shield her from the driving rain.
As they dashed toward the entrance, two figures detached themselves from the shelter of the massive stone pillars. One was Sarah, wearing a sharp trench coat and holding a heavy leather briefcase; the other was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark federal marshal’s uniform, his badge gleaming through the gloom.
“Mark! Over here!” Sarah called out, waving her arm to guide them through the security checkpoint doors.
They crossed the threshold into the expansive, marble-floored lobby, the heavy glass doors swinging shut behind them with a muffled thud that cut off the roar of the city traffic. The warmth of the interior hit them instantly. The marshal stepped forward, his expression professional yet kind as he looked down at Lily, who was clutching her pink backpack tightly.
“Mr. Vance? I’m Marshal Thomas. Your digital transfer has been received and authenticated by our cyber crimes unit,” the marshal said, his voice resonant and reassuring. “You’re safe here.”
Mark let out a breath he felt he had been holding for days, his shoulders slumping slightly as the adrenaline finally began to ebb. He set Lily down gently, watching as she looked up at the towering marble statues and the vaulted ceilings of the hall. Sarah stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Mark’s arm.

“We have the files, Mark. Arthur managed to dump the main server logs from his terminal just before security locked him out of the building,” Sarah said, her eyes bright with professional validation. “The SEC is already moving to freeze the corporate assets permanently. Elena can’t hide from this anymore.”
Before Mark could answer, the glass entry doors swung open again. Through the rain-streaked panes, a familiar beige pantsuit cut through the dismal gray of the street. Elena Vance strode up the marble steps, moving with her characteristic unyielding authority, flanked by two private attorneys in expensive dark suits. She stopped at the top of the security barrier, her eyes locking onto Mark with an expression of cold, calculated fury that defied the federal presence surrounding them.
