Chapter 8: Voices Across the Wire

Clara held the cordless phone close to Lily’s ear, her own hand trembling slightly as she maintained the connection to the hospital room miles away. ""Say hello to Daddy, sweet pea,"" Clara prompted gently, watching the toddler’s face for any sign of confusion or fear. Lily stared at the black plastic device for a second before pressing her small ear against the receiver, mimicking how she had seen adults hold phones. ""Daddy?"" her voice piped out into the silent bedroom, clear and full of innocent wonder. A heavy, ragged breath came through the speaker first, followed by a voice so weak it barely registered above a whisper.
""Hey there, my little redbird,"" David rasped from his hospital bed, the sound catching in his throat before he managed a soft, strained chuckle. ""Are you being a good helper for grandma?"" Tears sprang instantly to Clara’s eyes as she watched Lily’s face light up with a radiant, disbelieving smile. ""I drawing chalk flowers on the sidewalk, Daddy! And we build a big tent with sheets!"" Lily blurted out excitedly, her sleepiness completely forgotten as she recounted the day's adventures. Clara placed her hand over her own mouth to muffle her emotional response, marveling at the resilience of a three-year-old child who could bridge a chasm of pain with pure joy.

On the other end of the line, Sarah must have been holding the phone close to David’s ear, translating every syllable of his strained responses. For five precious minutes, the hospital room and the suburban bedroom dissolved into a single shared space of love and longing. David promised to bring home a new box of crayons as soon as he was discharged, and Lily solemnly promised to save the biggest chalk flower on the patio just for him. When the conversation finally wound down, David’s voice grew noticeably thicker with exhaustion. ""I love you, pumpkin. Go back to sleep now,"" he whispered. ""Love you too, Daddy. Come home soon,"" Lily replied earnestly.
Clara pressed the disconnect button, plunging the room back into quiet darkness. Lily handed the phone back to Clara with a solemn expression, the excitement fading back into the natural heaviness of the nocturnal hour. Clara tucked her back under the star-patterned quilt, smoothing the fabric down around her shoulders. ""See, honey? He’s right here with us, even when he’s far away,"" Clara whispered, kissing Lily’s warm forehead. Lily gave a sleepy nod, her eyes drifting closed almost immediately as her breathing settled back into a deep, untroubled rhythm. Clara remained sitting in the dark room for a long time, watching over the sleeping child with a renewed sense of purpose.
