Chapter 7: The Midnight Call

Clara sat at the kitchen table by the dim light of a single desk lamp, reviewing a stack of household bills and medical insurance forms that felt like hieroglyphics written in a foreign language. The house was entirely silent, save for the faint hum of the refrigerator and the occasional settling of the wooden frame against the autumn chill. Her thoughts drifted back to the hospital, picturing David lying beneath the stark white sheets, tethered to monitors that beeped in a rhythm dictated by machinery rather than nature. Sarah’s earlier text message had been brief: ""He’s resting, but his blood pressure is still fluctuating. Stay with Lily.""
At 1:42 AM, the landline phone on the kitchen wall rang with a shrill, piercing urgency that shattered the quiet. Clara jumped, her heart hammering against her ribs as she crossed the kitchen in two strides and snatched the receiver before it could ring a second time. ""Hello?"" she said, her voice tight with apprehension. ""Clara? It’s Sarah,"" came the strained whisper from the other end of the line. The background noise of the hospital was absent; Sarah must have stepped out into a quiet corridor or stairwell. ""David just woke up for a few minutes. He asked for Lily. He’s lucid, but the doctor says his fever spiked briefly. He just wants to hear her voice.""

Clara looked toward the hallway leading to the child's bedroom. Waking a three-year-old in the dead of night was a delicate operation, fraught with the risk of terrifying her. Yet, denying a father’s urgent plea when his recovery hung in the balance was impossible. ""I'll wake her gently, Sarah. Put me on speakerphone near his bed as soon as I connect,"" Clara instructed, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. She hung up the phone and walked down the darkened hallway, her slippers making no sound on the wooden floor. Pushing open Lily’s bedroom door, she saw the faint silhouette of the toddler sleeping peacefully beneath the star-patterned quilt.
Clara knelt beside the toddler’s bed, gently placing a warm hand on Lily’s shoulder. ""Sweet pea,"" Clara whispered softly, stroking her red hair. Lily stirred, letting out a soft sigh before opening her sleepy green eyes. ""Grandma?"" she mumbled, blinking against the dim light filtering in from the hallway. ""Yes, honey, I’m right here. Daddy is on the telephone. He wants to say hello to his favorite girl."" Lily’s eyes widened slightly as she processed the words. She sat up, rubbing her eyes with both fists, instantly alert to the magic word that governed her entire emotional universe.
