Chapter 13 - THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR AT THE GATES

The heavy iron security gates groaned as they slid slowly along their tracks, admitting a battered, dust-covered pickup truck that stood out sharply against the luxury sedans and sleek SUVs parked in the lot. The truck rattled to a halt a few yards away from Chloe’s compact car, its engine coughing once before dying entirely.
Everyone in the parking lot turned to watch the unexpected vehicle. Even Jonathan Vance frowned, stepping back toward the silver SUV and resting his hand near the security radio clipped to his belt.
The driver-side door of the truck swung open with a loud squeak, and an elderly man in a faded flannel shirt and a worn canvas jacket stepped out. He looked around the brightly lit asphalt with tired, squinting eyes before locking his gaze directly onto Barbara.
It was Arthur Pendelton, Michael’s maternal uncle and the former co-trustee of the original family estate—a man Michael had told Chloe was living in a nursing home in upstate New York after suffering a severe stroke two years ago.
“Barbara,” Arthur called out, his voice gravelly and carrying the unhurried weight of rural exhaustion as he walked toward them across the pavement. “I told you dodging my calls wouldn't stop me from getting down here before you closed the ledger.”
Barbara’s posture stiffened noticeably. The smooth, unshakeable composure she had maintained all evening faltered for the first time, a brief flash of genuine anxiety crossing her features before she managed to mask it behind a cold, controlled mask.
“Arthur,” Barbara said, her voice dropping into a register of sharp warning. “You have no business being here. Your medical POA was revoked by the probate court months ago.”
“My probate authorization was signed under duress while I was recovering from surgery in a facility you handpicked, Barbara,” Arthur retorted, stopping ten feet away from the group. He didn't look at Jonathan or Elena; his faded eyes fixed entirely on Chloe, who stood frozen beside her car door.
“You must be Chloe,” Arthur said, offering a weary, sympathetic nod. “Michael’s wife. The collateral damage in Barbara’s grand corporate restructuring project.”
Chloe swallowed hard, stepping past the hood of her car. “Who are you? Michael told me you were in a nursing home upstate. He said you couldn't even remember your own name.”
“Michael was told what Barbara needed him to believe so he wouldn't start asking questions about where the family trust assets were actually going,” Arthur replied, reaching into the deep pocket of his canvas jacket and pulling out a thick, yellowed manila folder tied with a faded red ribbon. He walked past Barbara as if she weren't even standing there and handed the folder directly to Chloe.
