Chapter 10 - THE TEXT MESSAGE FROM THE UNKNOWN NUMBER

The harsh vibration of Chloe’s cell phone cut through the cold night air like a physical blow. She pulled her hand away from the fountain pen Vance was holding and reached into her coat pocket, her fingers fumbling with the device against her numb palm.

She pulled the phone out and glanced at the glowing screen. It wasn’t a notification from a banking app or a reminder from a calendar. It was a direct SMS message from an unknown, unlisted ten-digit number.

“Do not sign the waiver. Barbara doesn't own Vanguard Holdings; the trust was dissolved three years ago. Ask her who actually holds the primary mortgage on your house.”

Chloe stared at the words, her breath catching in her throat. She read the message twice, the digital letters glowing against the dark backdrop of her cracked screen. She looked up slowly from her phone, her eyes locking onto Barbara with a sudden, razor-sharp intensity that made the older woman pause.

“What is it?” Barbara asked, her smooth composure faltering for a fraction of a second as she noticed the sudden shift in Chloe’s demeanor.

“You told me Vanguard Holdings is a family trust,” Chloe said, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that carried clearly across the quiet parking lot. “You told me you were protecting us from creditors and federal prison.”

Vance shifted uncomfortably beside Barbara, his professional mask slipping just enough for Chloe to catch a fleeting look of genuine apprehension in his eyes.

“Vanguard Holdings is the family trust,” Vance interjected smoothly, stepping half an inch closer to Barbara. “Mrs. Miller, do not listen to anonymous text messages sent by opportunistic third parties trying to derail a legal settlement.”

“Is it?” Chloe demanded, stepping back toward her car and holding up her phone so the screen caught the amber light of the security lamps. “Because an anonymous source just informed me that the trust was dissolved three years ago, and that Vanguard is actually a private acquisition shell operating under a completely different corporate umbrella.”

Barbara’s expression didn't crumble, but the slow, deliberate way she adjusted her pearl earrings betrayed a sudden internal calculation. She lowered her hands into her coat pockets, her gray eyes narrowing as she studied her daughter-in-law with newfound caution.

“And who, pray tell, is this anonymous source?” Barbara asked, her voice dangerously calm. “A disgruntled former employee of Michael’s? A loan shark looking to collect on debts your husband forgot to mention?”

“That doesn't matter,” Chloe fired back, adrenaline surging through her veins and driving away the paralyzing shock of the past hour. She looked down at the asset waiver still resting in Vance’s hand, then back at the manila ledger on her passenger seat. “What matters is that you lied about why we are standing here tonight. You didn't bring us to that restaurant to save us. You brought us there because you needed our signatures on these documents before the title transfer cleared.”

Vance looked at Barbara, his mouth opening to offer another rehearsed corporate defense, but Barbara raised a single manicured hand, silencing him instantly.

“You think you have uncovered a grand conspiracy, Chloe,” Barbara said quietly, taking a slow step toward the younger woman. “You think this is a game of chess where you can outsmart the board by listening to ghosts in the dark.”

“I think you are hiding something much bigger than Michael’s financial mess,” Chloe retorted, her grip tightening around her phone as she backed toward her car door. “And I am not signing a damn thing until I find out what it is.”

Before Barbara could reply, the headlights of the silver SUV flashed twice, and the vehicle’s automated rear door popped open with a sharp mechanical hiss, revealing a figure sitting in the darkened interior.
