Chapter 2 - The Vanguard

Nathan’s thumbs moved instantly over the keypad, but before he could trace the sender's IP relay, the screen flared red with a self-deleting malware wipe. The device went dead in his hands.
Nathan didn't waste a second. He pulled out a suppressed tactical carbine, three loaded thirty-round magazines, and a combat utility belt. He slung the rifle under an oversized canvas work jacket, stepped out of the shed, and walked briskly to the main house.
Clara was clearing the breakfast plates, humming an old melody. When Nathan closed the heavy oak door and dropped the iron deadbolts, her song stopped abruptly.
"Nathan?" Clara turned, seeing the grim calculation set into his features. "What's wrong?"
"We have company coming up the spur," Nathan said, his voice calm, firm, and gentle to avoid terrifying Toby, who was stacking wooden blocks on the rug. "Clara, take Toby down into the root cellar beneath the kitchen pantry. Lock the interior steel bolt. Do not open it for anyone except my three-knock signal."
Toby looked up, his big hazel eyes widening, the old dread flickering across his face for a split second. "Dad? Are the bad people back?"
Nathan dropped to one knee, cupping Toby’s small chin in his hand. "No one is hurting us, Toby. Your dad is standing right here at the door. I just need you to be my brave little soldier and keep Mom safe down below. Can you do that for me?"
Toby swallowed hard, clutched his small wooden eagle carving, and nodded bravely. "Yes, sir."
Clara took the boy’s hand and lifted the hidden floor hatch beneath the kitchen rug, ushering Toby and Arthur down into the fortified concrete basement. Arthur gave Nathan a solemn, knowing nod before the hatch sealed shut, the heavy bolt sliding into place with a definitive clack.
Nathan turned off the kitchen lights, stepped into the hallway, and looked through the slatted blinds of the eastern window.
Three modified black all-terrain vehicles were creeping up the lower logging trail, their engines running on low-RPM electric hybrid drives. Men in sterile dark-grey uniforms jumped out, fanning out into the tall grass. They carried European submachine guns fitted with suppressors.
These were not street thugs or regional private security. Their bounding overwatch movement, their spacing, and their rapid muzzle discipline screamed Tier-One foreign mercenaries.

From the lead vehicle stepped a tall man with shaved silver hair, a scarred neck, and cold blue eyes. He raised a hand, signaling his squad to halt fifty yards from the porch.
The man lifted an amplified megaphone to his mouth: "Major Nathan Blackwood. We do not want your family. We are here to collect the ledger Arthur hid in the Blue Ridge vault. Step out, or we burn this valley to the bedrock."
