Chapter 12 - The Iron Sky

The twin sonic booms rattled the teeth in Nathan's skull as the F-22 Raptors streaked across the ridgeline at Mach 1.5, their vapor cones flashing white against the mountain clouds.

The black contractor gunships were caught completely flat-footed.

Over the open emergency frequencies, a voice boomed with the thunderous authority of the United States Air Force Combat Command: "Unidentified rotary aircraft over Shenandoah airspace, you are in direct violation of restricted federal airspace and actively engaging United States territory. Break your target locks and land immediately, or you will be intercepted with lethal force!"

The lead mercenary gunship tried to bank hard to the south, its rotors screaming as it flared toward the tree line to evade radar lock. It was too late.

The trailing Raptor banked vertically, dropping through the cloud ceiling like a silver falcon. A burst of twenty-millimeter armor-piercing tracer rounds tore from the fighter’s Gatling cannon, stitching across the mercenary helicopter's tail boom. The tail rotor sheared off in a shower of sparks; the gunship entered an uncontrollable flat spin and slammed into the opposite granite cliff face, exploding into a ball of black smoke and twisted metal.

The second gunship immediately lowered its collective, setting down roughly in the lower clover meadow, its crew spilling out with their hands raised over their heads as four massive Sikorsky tactical transport helicopters crested the southern ridge, escorting an entire battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Nathan pushed himself up from the creek mud, every bone in his body aching from the shockwave. His face was streaked with soot and blood, his clothes torn, but his eyes were sharp and clear.

On the driveway, Julian Sterling was crawling through the dirt, his expensive overcoat in tatters, coughing uncontrollably as the burning debris from the barn rained around him. His silver cane was broken in half; his syndicate was reduced to smoking rubble.

Nathan walked toward him, his combat boots clicking heavily on the gravel.

Sterling looked up, his amber eyes wide with disbelieving horror as he saw Nathan rising from the smoke like an immortal phantom. "How... how are you still standing?"

Nathan didn't answer. He reached down, grabbed Sterling by the collar of his ruined coat, and hoisted him off the ground with one arm, slamming him against the charred frame of the burning ATV.

"Your broadcast reached the Joint Chiefs, Sterling," Nathan said, his voice deadly quiet. "General Harris personally authorized the air scramble ten minutes ago. Every offshore account, every corrupted politician, and every mercenary base you owned has been seized by federal authorities."

Sterling’s lips trembled, his arrogance completely evaporating into pathetic, sniveling terror. "Nathan... please... I have hundreds of millions hidden where the government can't touch it... I can make you richer than your father ever dreamed..."

Nathan looked at the burning ruins of his cabin, then looked into the eyes of the monster who had tried to murder his child.

"You don't have enough money in the world to buy another five minutes of freedom," Nathan said.

Nathan dropped Sterling face-first into the mud as two dozen armed Army Rangers in full tactical combat gear swarmed the clearing, their assault rifles leveled at the trembling billionaire.

Leading the ground assault was General Raymond Harris himself, stepping down from the lead transport helicopter, his eyes sweeping across the burning compound until they locked onto Nathan.

Harris walked up to Nathan, his stern face softening with deep, unmeasured respect. He raised his hand to his brow and delivered a crisp, formal salute.

"Lieutenant Colonel Blackwood," Harris said. "The threat is eliminated. The Republic thanks you."

Nathan slowly returned the salute, his voice raw. "My family is in the mine shaft beneath the barn, General. Get them out."
