Chapter 7

Margaret scrambled desperately to regain the upper hand, her voice cracking with hysteria as she appealed to the retreating crowd of guests, begging them not to listen to Arthur’s lies. She shouted that Clara was a gold-digger who had trapped Julian into a false sense of obligation, using her pregnancy as a weapon to secure a foothold in their fortune. The desperation in Margaret’s voice was palpable, echoing hollowly off the marble walls of the grand ballroom.
Julian finally found his voice, stepping forward to interject between his mother and Arthur. He stammered an apology, his composure entirely shattered, attempting to frame the evening's catastrophic events as an unfortunate misunderstanding driven by stress and family miscommunication. He looked directly at Clara, his eyes pleading for a shred of mercy, reminding her of the months they had spent together, the whispered promises under quiet night skies. He asked her to remember what they shared, hoping to salvage the wreckage through sheer emotional manipulation.
Clara looked at the man she had loved, the man who had stood silently by while his mother and his new bride tore her dress open and exposed her body to a crowd of jeering strangers. The contrast between Julian’s sharp black tuxedo and his utter cowardice was sickening. She pulled her hand away from his lingering reach, her voice steady and clear as she told him that his silence during her humiliation was an answer far louder than any words he could offer now. She reminded him that when Margaret and Chloe had assaulted her modesty, Julian’s only concern had been protecting his family’s social standing by telling her to submit quietly to the search.
Marcus stepped forward beside Arthur, sliding a secondary set of documents across a nearby cocktail table toward Julian. These papers outlined the immediate termination of Julian’s executive position within the family holding company, an asset controlled entirely by Arthur’s primary syndicate. Julian stared at the signature line in sheer horror, realizing that not only had he lost his social standing, but he was now entirely financially destitute, tied to a bankrupt family and a shattered marriage before the wedding night had even begun.

Chloe let out a sharp, choked gasp, finally breaking her silence as she realized the grand life she thought she had married into was nothing more than an illusion built on borrowed money and stolen grace. She ripped the veil from her hair, casting the delicate white tulle onto the marble floor before turning and running blindly toward the service doors, her heavy white dress dragging behind her like a discarded skin. The ballroom was in complete chaos, the illusion of perfection utterly destroyed.
