Chapter 10

As Arthur and Clara prepared to leave the grand ballroom, Marcus stayed behind for a final moment to hand Julian a single white business card embossed with legal coordinates. Marcus spoke in a low, even tone, advising Julian to retain independent counsel immediately, as the corporate fraud investigations involving the Sterling holdings would soon encompass every member of the executive board. Julian took the card with numb fingers, his hands shaking so violently he nearly dropped it onto the marble floor.
The glittering crystal chandelier overhead flickered once, as if the estate itself was drawing its final breath before plunging into darkness. The ambient noise of the surrounding gardens filtered in through the tall arched windows, reminding them of the normal, breathing world that existed entirely outside the toxic bubble of the Vance estate. Clara walked toward the grand double doors with her head held high, the light blue satin dress flowing gracefully around her steps. She no longer felt the burning gaze of the crowd or the suffocating weight of expectation. She felt only the steady, powerful rhythm of her own life and the future growing safely within her.
Passing the heavy oak threshold, Clara paused for a fraction of a second to look back at the ballroom. Margaret remained slumped on the settee, a lonely, broken figure in a sea of empty tables and scattered floral arrangements. Chloe was long gone, fleeing into the night from a life she had rushed into without foresight or caution. Julian stood alone in the center of the vast, echoing room, a man dressed for a celebration that had become his tomb.
Arthur held the heavy door wide for his daughter, offering her a safe passage into the cool, clean night air. Stepping outside, Clara breathed in the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine, a stark and welcome contrast to the artificial luxury of the ballroom. The sleek black town car waited at the bottom of the steps, its engine idling softly. Marcus walked a few paces ahead, opening the rear door with professional reverence.

Clara slid into the plush leather interior of the vehicle, adjusting her dress with calm, deliberate movements. She placed her hands gently over her pregnant belly, feeling a soft, reassuring kick that brought a genuine, radiant smile to her lips. She had survived the fire, and she was stepping out of the ashes with her dignity entirely intact.
