Chapter 6

"It wasn't a dead sparrow from the garden, Julian," Clara said, her voice cold and steady, cutting through his manufactured narrative with razor-like precision. She stepped around the quartz island, closing the distance between them until she was standing just a foot away. "Leo keeps his nature journals in the sunroom. He records every single migration pattern and wildlife sighting by the fountain. The fountain where you poured out my protein shake two mornings ago."

Julian’s smile vanished completely. The polished facade cracked, revealing the hard, desperate man beneath the designer button-down and wool vest. "Clara, you are not thinking clearly. The lack of sleep—"

"Stop saying that," she interrupted, her tone low and lethal. She held up the amber bottle, shaking it just enough for the single white pill to rattle against the plastic sides. "You brought this home because you want me compliant. You want me docile while you systematically dismantle my life, my name on the property deeds, and my access to my own accounts. Do you think I didn't notice the signature on the trust transfer? Do you think I didn't see the certified mail receipt from the bank in your desk drawer?"

Martha looked back and forth between them, her breathing shallow and rapid. The older woman’s face had gone pale, the color draining away until her skin looked like aged parchment. "Julian... is that true? What is she talking about? What property deeds?"

"Mother, stay out of this," Julian snapped, his restraint finally breaking under the pressure of the public corner he had backed himself into. His voice was sharp, laced with an ugly edge that he usually kept hidden behind closed doors. "This is between Clara and me. She is unwell. She’s been imagining financial conspiracies for months. It’s part of her condition."

"My condition," Clara repeated, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. It was a dry, humorless sound. She turned her head toward the hallway where Leo still stood, watching them with those wide, terrified eyes. "Leo, sweetheart, go to the mudroom and wait by the back door. Take your backpack. We’re going to Grandma’s house right now."

Leo nodded instantly, turning on his heel with a silent efficiency that suggested he had been mentally prepared for this exact command for days. His soft-soled sneakers padded quickly down the corridor, fading toward the rear exit.

Julian lunged forward, his hand shooting out to grab Clara’s wrist before she could move past him. His fingers clamped around her arm like a vise, his grip hard enough to bruise the delicate skin beneath her white cuff. "You aren't going anywhere, Clara. Not with the boy. You're staying right here until we sort this out like adults."

Martha gasped, stepping forward and striking Julian’s arm with her open palm. "Let her go, Julian! Have you lost your mind? Unhand your wife this instant!"
