Chapter 2

The cap gave way with a faint, dry pop that seemed to echo too loudly in the sunlit kitchen. Clara held the small brown bottle in both hands, her gaze fixed on the opening. The metallic scent of processed pharmaceutical powder drifted up, sharp and unfamiliar. She tilted the bottle slightly, letting a single small white pill slide onto her palm. It was unmarked, completely devoid of the serial numbers or pharmaceutical stamps that standard manufacturers always imprinted on their tablets.
Julian had not moved. His arms were now folded loosely across his chest, the fabric of his blue shirt straining slightly against his shoulders. He watched her every movement with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a specimen under a microscope. "Take it now," he said softly, breaking the silence that had stretched uncomfortably between them since the bottle changed hands. "The doctor said consistency is key to managing the transition."
Clara looked up, her suspicion flaring hot beneath her skin. "My doctor didn't prescribe this, Julian. Dr. Vance always uses the central pharmacy on Maple Street. This label has been torn off." She turned the bottle over, pointing to the scraped white paper where a pharmacy barcode should have been. The adhesive was fresh, still tacky at the edge where someone had hurriedly peeled away the identifying information before handing it to her.
Martha stepped forward from the shadow of the pantry archway, her beige jacket rustling softly. "Let me see that, Clara," the older woman said, her voice carrying a maternal authority that usually commanded immediate obedience. Martha extended a steady hand, her fingers trembling only slightly.
Clara hesitated, torn between the urge to protect the evidence and the desperate need for validation. She dropped the loose pill back into the bottle and handed the container to her mother-in-law. Martha adjusted her reading glasses, squinting at the scraped cardboard backing. She turned the bottle over, running a wrinkled thumb over the smooth plastic.
"This isn't from Dr. Vance," Martha murmured, her tone dropping into a troubled register. She looked past Clara to fix her stern eyes on Julian. "Where did you actually get these, Julian? You told me you were picking up household supplies downtown."
Julian’s jaw tightened, a muscle jumping beneath his close-shaved skin. He unfolded his arms and let them drop to his sides, his fingers curling into loose fists. "I spoke with a specialist, Mother. Someone who understands the strain Clara has been under lately. The forgetfulness, the erratic hours in the studio. You’ve both seen how overwhelmed she’s become."
Clara bristled, a sharp spike of anger cutting through her fear. "I am not overwhelmed, Julian. I was working late on the commission for the gallery. You're making me sound unstable."

"Am I?" Julian asked quietly, stepping closer.
