Chapter 6: The Unwelcome Offer

The heavy mahogany door of the VIP lounge swung open without a polite knock, interrupting the quiet conversation between Julian and Clara. Arthur Vance stepped into the room, his towering frame instantly filling the cozy space, followed closely by the slick, silent presence of Victor Thorne. Clara instinctively shrank back into her oversized armchair, her fingers gripping the armrests as the man who had coldly dismissed her a half-hour earlier strode toward them with a predatory confidence. Julian stood up immediately, placing himself physically between Arthur and the young girl, his eyes flashing with immediate protective hostility. "This room is private, Arthur," Julian said sharply, his voice dropping into a low, warning register. "I suggest you remove yourself before I call security." Arthur offered a thin, practiced smile that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes. He raised his hands in a placating gesture, though his posture remained rigidly dominant. "Calm down, Julian. I’m simply here to make things right," Arthur replied smoothly, his gaze sliding past the curator to fix upon Clara. "Young lady, I must apologize for my earlier remarks. The lighting in the hall was poor, and frankly, we see so many amateurs trying to break into the market that skepticism becomes second nature." Clara remained silent, her eyes darting between Arthur and Julian, her instincts warning her that this man was dangerous. Julian crossed his arms over his chest, refusing to yield an inch of ground. "Save your apologies, Arthur. Your opinion of her work changed the moment you heard the name Elena Vance. State your business and leave." Arthur chuckled softly, taking a slow step closer to the mahogany desk where the wrapped canvas rested. "Let’s be pragmatic, Julian. The art world is messy, unpredictable, and full of bureaucratic delays. Carbon dating, provenance checks, legal battles over estate rights—these things take months, sometimes years. This child’s mother needs surgery right now, this week." Clara’s breath caught in her throat at the mention of her mother, her eyes locking onto Arthur with a mixture of hope and fear. Arthur noticed the reaction instantly and pressed his advantage with calculated precision. "I am prepared to offer a binding, immediate cash settlement for that painting tonight," Arthur continued, his voice dropping into a smooth, persuasive cadence. "Two million dollars, wired directly to the hospital within the hour. No waiting, no legal red tape, no media circus." Julian’s face darkened with rage. "You vulture," Julian hissed, stepping forward. "You try to publicly humiliate her, and then you try to exploit her desperation with a lowball buyout?" "Two million is a fortune for a twelve-year-old in paint-splattered clothes," Arthur countered coldly, his gaze hardening as he looked down at Clara. "Think about your mother, child. Do you want to gamble her life on Julian’s endless bureaucratic process, or do you want guaranteed money in the bank tonight?" Clara looked up at Julian, confusion clouding her young eyes, the massive numbers spinning in her head like a confusing puzzle.
