Chapter 12: The Legal Trap

The tension in Room 402 skyrocketed instantly as Arthur Vance stepped closer to the hospital bed, his imposing presence dominating the small space. Julian dropped his coffee cup onto the bedside tray, stepping protectively in front of Clara and her mother, his eyes blazing with righteous fury. "Get out of here, Arthur," Julian warned, his voice dangerously low. "This is a private medical ward, and you have no legal right to be here." Arthur chuckled coldly, waving a dismissive hand as Victor Thorne stepped forward, opening the heavy leather briefcase to reveal a thick stack of embossed legal papers. "Oh, I have every right, Julian," Arthur replied smoothly, his gaze fixed mockingly on Eleanor. "Hello, cousin. It’s been twenty-five years. You certainly mastered the art of playing dead, but you apparently forgot to read the fine print of your lifelong exclusive representation contract with Vance Galleries." Eleanor’s face tightened, a flash of defensive anger replacing her previous weariness. "That contract was nullified the day you forged my signature on the subsidiary rights transfer, Arthur," Eleanor retorted clearly, her voice carrying a sharp, undeniable authority. "I walked away legally and completely, and you know it." Victor adjusted his glasses, stepping forward with a practiced, arrogant smile. "With all due respect, Ms. Vance—or should I say, Mrs. Sterling, given your past marriage records—contracts don't simply vanish because an artist decides to abandon her studio," Victor stated smoothly, holding up a yellowed, notarized document. "Clause 14 clearly stipulates that any artistic works produced during your lifetime, regardless of when or where they are created, remain the exclusive intellectual and physical property of Vance Galleries for distribution and liquidation. That eight-million-dollar painting your daughter foolishly brought to the gallery last night legally belongs to us." Clara gasped, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked frantically from Arthur to her mother. "No! That's not true! I painted it! It’s mine!" Arthur turned his cold, calculating gaze toward the young girl, his expression devoid of any human empathy. "It doesn't matter who held the brush, child," Arthur said cruelly. "The artistic lineage, the technique, and the legal estate rights flow directly through your mother. And since your mother is bound by our exclusive contract, every single dollar of that valuation belongs to my firm." Julian stepped forward, snatching the legal brief directly from Victor’s hands and scanning the pages with rapid intensity. His face drained of color as he realized the horrifying brilliance of Arthur’s trap. The contract was real, it was binding, and unless a specific loophole could be found within the next few hours, Arthur Vance was going to steal Clara’s masterpiece and leave them penniless once more. "You are exploiting a technicality to rob a dying woman and a child," Julian whispered, his hands trembling with rage as he gripped the legal papers. Arthur smirked, turning toward the door with a dismissive wave. "Business is business, Julian. The sheriff will be here with an asset seizure warrant for the painting within the hour. Enjoy the surgery while it lasts."
