Chapter 4: The Subpoena

The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the kitchen counter where Elena sat reviewing financial spreadsheets on her laptop. The screen glowed with columns of numbers, transaction codes, and overseas shell companies that painted a damning picture of Julian’s corporate empire. Every entry was a thread in a tapestry of financial deception designed to hide millions from tax authorities and creditors alike. Beside the laptop sat a warm cup of black coffee, the steam curling lazily into the cool morning air. Leo was still asleep in the adjoining bedroom, his breathing a steady, comforting rhythm through the open door.

A sharp knock at the apartment door broke the morning quiet. Elena didn’t startle; she had anticipated the swift reaction of Julian’s legal team. She walked steadily across the hardwood floor, unlatched the deadbolt, and opened the door. Standing in the hallway was a young courier in a crisp gray uniform holding a thick manila envelope. Without a word, he handed over the papers and extended a digital pad for her signature. Elena signed cleanly, her hand steady and resolute, thanking the courier before closing and locking the door once more.

She carried the envelope to the kitchen table, sliding the heavy cardstock documents out. As expected, Julian had filed an emergency motion for temporary custody, accusing her of unstable behavior and reckless abandonment of the marital home. The audacity of the claims almost made her laugh. Julian had spent the last three years systematically dismantling her public independence while carrying on a blatantly public affair with Clara, yet his lawyers had somehow painted him as the aggrieved, devoted family man. It was a classic playbook maneuver designed to intimidate and exhaust her resources before the trial even began.

Elena picked up her phone and dialed Marcus’s direct line. He answered on the first ring, his voice sharp and alert despite the early hour. "I take it the paperwork arrived?" he asked without a preamble.

"It did," Elena replied calmly, scanning the legal jargon with practiced ease. "They’re pushing for an emergency hearing on Friday, claiming I fled with the child without cause. They want to restrict my visitation rights until a court-appointed evaluator assesses my mental state."

"Typical Julian," Marcus muttered on the other end of the line. "He wants to control the narrative before the audit findings become public record. But he made a fatal mistake. He submitted his corporate asset declarations under oath to support his claim of financial stability. Those declarations directly contradict the offshore records you copied from his home office."

"Then we don't need to play defense," Elena said, a steely edge entering her voice. "We cross-file immediately with the forensic audit attached as exhibit A. Let the judge see the real reason he’s so desperate to lock down his assets and silence me."

"Consider it done. I'll have our legal counsel file the motion by noon," Marcus confirmed.

Elena hung up the phone and walked to the doorway of Leo’s bedroom. Her son was still sleeping soundly, one arm thrown over the edge of the mattress, his face entirely serene. She felt a fierce, protective surge of energy warm her chest. Julian could marshal all the expensive lawyers and public relations firms money could buy, but he had underestimated a mother fighting for her child’s future. The legal war had officially begun, and Elena had no intention of backing down.
