Chapter 10

The fallout within Vance Enterprises was swift, brutal, and entirely public. By Monday morning, financial news networks were broadcasting breaking reports about sudden executive shakeups, plummeting stock values, and a federal grand jury subpoena issued for Julian Vance regarding alleged corporate tax evasion and offshore asset concealment. The sprawling glass skyscraper that housed his corporate headquarters suddenly found itself swarmed by investigative reporters and television crews. Julian, who had spent his entire adult life cultivating an image of infallible corporate genius, was watching his carefully constructed empire collapse in real time.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of the downtown apartment, Elena watched the morning news broadcast while sipping her coffee. Leo was getting ready for school in the next room, humming happily as he packed his dinosaur-themed backpack. The stark contrast between the chaos engulfing Julian’s gilded world and the peaceful, orderly rhythm of their new life was striking. There was no sense of gloating or malice in Elena’s heart; there was only a profound sense of closure. The man who had tried to reduce her to a decorative accessory was finally facing the unvarnished consequences of his own dishonesty.
Her phone buzzed on the counter, flashing an unknown number. She picked it up and answered calmly. "Hello?"
"Elena?" The voice on the other end was strained, breathless, and completely devoid of its usual arrogant cadence. It was Julian.
Elena remained silent for a moment, letting the heavy weight of his desperation hang in the air between them. "How did you get this number, Julian?" she asked evenly.
"It doesn't matter," Julian stammered, the defensive armor he always wore completely shattered. "Elena, please... you have to listen to me. The board has frozen my accounts. They’re threatening to vote me out by noon today. If you release the full forensic audit to the federal prosecutors, my career is finished. Everything I’ve built will be completely gone."
"You built it on a foundation of deceit and intimidation, Julian," Elena replied, her tone unwavering and calm. "You chose to hide assets, you chose to betray our marriage, and you chose to treat our son as a bargaining chip. I didn't destroy your empire; your own hubris did."
"We can settle," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking slightly with genuine panic. "Full terms, whatever you want. Complete financial settlement, transfer of properties, no custody restrictions. Just call off your legal team and the auditors. Please, Elena. We can fix this."

"The only thing that needs fixing is the damage you caused to our son's sense of security," Elena said firmly. "And that cannot be solved with a corporate settlement check. You made your choices, Julian. Now you live with them."
Before he could speak another word, Elena ended the call and blocked the number permanently. She walked over to the kitchen counter, picked up her laptop, and sent a final, encrypted file transfer directly to Sarah’s office containing the last remaining pieces of evidence required by the federal investigators. It was over. The chapter of her life defined by Julian’s control was firmly closed, leaving her free to write an entirely new future on her own terms.
