Chapter 5 - The Architect's Price

Standing in the shattered doorway was a man who looked entirely out of place amidst the smoke and tactical gear. He wore a charcoal cashmere overcoat, an expensive silk tie, and wire-rimmed glasses. His hair was silvered at the temples, perfectly combed despite the chaos. In his gloved right hand, he held a sleek remote detonator with a single blinking green light.
"Julian Vance," Marcus whispered, the name tasting like venom on his tongue.
Clara’s heart seized. Julian Vance was Marcus’s estranged elder brother—a billionaire venture capitalist who had funded the very foundation that endowed Oakridge Reproductive. Marcus hadn't spoken to him in nearly a decade, ever since Julian had quietly bought up and liquidated their late father’s pharmaceutical patents.
"Hello, Marcus," Julian said, his voice smooth and conversational, entirely undisturbed by the dead bodies around his feet. "You always did have terrible timing. You could have chosen any clinic on the Eastern Seaboard. But you had to let your wife choose Oakridge."
"You did this?" Marcus yelled, stepping forward. "You sent death squads to murder newborn children?"
"I sent specialists to retrieve private property," Julian corrected calmly, his eyes flicking toward Althea. "Dr. Sterling here spent six years of my money perfecting a CRISPR sequence capable of eradicating degenerative cellular decay—the very sequence that resides in the bone marrow of that infant. She decided her conscience was worth more than our contract."
"The sequence was never meant to be commercialized for private oligarchs, Julian!" Althea shouted, drawing a suppressed sidearm from her hip and leveling it directly at Julian’s chest. "It was meant to cure pediatric leukemia worldwide. You wanted to auction it to foreign despots for their personal longevity therapy!"
"And I still will," Julian smiled faintly. He raised his thumb, hovering it over the detonator. "You fire that weapon, Althea, and the thermal charges rigged to the floor directly beneath this bed will detonate. The entire east wing collapses into the basement. Marcus, Clara, the baby, you—all pulverized into dust."
Clara pressed her forehead against the baby's warm head, silent prayers tumbling through her mind. The infant stirred, letting out a sharp, innocent whimper that cut through the standoff like a knife.
"What do you want, Julian?" Marcus asked, his voice steady despite the trembling in his limbs.
"Simple," Julian replied, gesturing with his free hand. "Althea surrenders her biometric key to the encrypted lab database. Clara hands the child over to my transport team waiting on the roof. In exchange, I let Marcus walk out of this hospital with his life. Clara can have another child—on my dime, at any clinic she desires."
Marcus looked at his brother, the man who shared his blood, and felt nothing but an ocean of revulsion. He glanced sideways at Althea. Her gun was steady, but her knuckles were white.
Then, Marcus looked back at Clara. Their eyes met, and in that split second of shared terror, an unspoken understanding passed between them.
"You're right, Julian," Marcus said softly, lowering his shoulders in apparent defeat. "Blood matters. Family matters."
Marcus took a slow step toward his brother, hands open. "Take the baby. Just let Clara go."
May you like
Julian smirked, lowering the detonator an inch. "Sensible as always, little brother."
Marcus didn't take another step forward. Instead, he dropped his weight instantly, sweeping the heavy aluminum IV pole across Julian’s shins with bone-breaking force.
