Chapter 12 - Shattered Heights

Marcus dropped through the ceiling like a falling anvil, landing directly on the shoulders of the lead operative with the full momentum of his weight. The man crashed to the marble floor with a sickening crack, his weapon skittering away.

Simultaneously, Althea swung down through the breach on a steel descent cable, firing two high-voltage taser darts from her secondary sidearm into the chests of the remaining two guards. The men convulsed violently, collapsing against the glass windows as thousands of volts surged through their central nervous systems.

Julian gasped in sheer disbelief, stumbling backward, raising his obsidian cane. With a twist of his wrist, he drew an eight-inch steel blade concealed within the cane's shaft. "Guards! Lockdown!"

"They're not coming, Julian," Marcus growled, pushing himself up from the floor, his face bruised, his good arm raised. "Althea severed the elevator hydraulic lines on the seventy-ninth floor. You're alone up here."

Althea didn't waste a second on Julian. She sprinted past the fallen men, kicking open the frosted glass door to the private laboratory annex. "Clara! Bring her in now!"

Clara rushed into the sterile lab. In the center of the room stood a stainless steel medical workstation, bathed in cold ultraviolet light. Resting in a motorized centrifuge was a rack of small, vacuum-sealed glass vials containing a luminous amber liquid: the stabilizer.

"Hold her down gently," Althea instructed, her hands moving with terrifying speed as she drew the fluid into an ultra-fine pediatric syringe. "Her veins are constricting. I have to administer this directly into the umbilical vascular port."

Clara placed the infant onto the padded examination tray, her hands gently pinning the baby's tiny arms. The baby was barely crying now, her skin mottled with a faint, dangerous bluish tint. "Hang on, sweetheart. Mommy's here. Please hang on."

Outside in the penthouse foyer, a violent struggle erupted. The sound of shattered glass and grunts of pain echoed into the lab. Marcus and Julian were locked in a savage, desperate grapple, the billionaire fighting with the feral strength of a cornered predator, his hidden blade slashing through the air.

Althea leaned over the infant, her breath held, her fingers steady despite the chaos ten feet away. With absolute precision, she guided the needle into the port.

She depressed the plunger. The amber fluid vanished into the child's bloodstream.

For three agonizing seconds, the baby remained motionless. The room fell into a terrifying, suffocating vacuum.

Then, the infant's tiny chest heaved. A sharp, violent gasp tore from her throat, followed by a loud, piercing, furious wail. The bluish tint on her skin began to recede, replaced by a flush of warm, healthy bronze.

"The vector is stabilizing," Althea breathed, collapsing against the stainless counter, tears finally flowing freely down her scarred cheeks. "She's safe. It worked."

Before Clara could cry out in relief, a deafening crash shook the glass partition behind them.

Marcus was thrown through the frosted doors, crashing hard against the chemical shelving, shattering dozens of reagent bottles. Blood was pouring from a deep slash across his forearm.

Standing in the doorway, drenched in sweat, his eyes wide with maniacal fury, was Julian Vance. In his left hand, he held the remote control for the building's structural safety systems.

"If I can't have the future," Julian screamed, slamming his hand down on the control panel, "nobody leaves this sky!"

A succession of violent explosions ripped through the structural columns of the eightieth floor, shattering the exterior glass facade and letting the black abyss of the storm swallow the room whole.
