Chapter 6

The secure phone line clicked softly before a crisp voice answered from the corporate headquarters downtown. Julian kept his gaze locked on the antique globe spinning slowly in the corner of the study as he authorized a full internal audit of the Vance Family Trust dating back four decades.

Clara stepped forward for the first time, her black dress rustling with an unmistakable warning. "You are tearing down the foundation of everything your grandfather built, Julian. Do you have any idea what happens to our stock holdings if the public gets wind of a contested inheritance dispute?"

"Let it burn," Julian replied without looking at her, his voice devoid of hesitation. He hung up the phone with a sharp click that echoed in the quiet room. "If this estate was built on fraud, coercion, and forced exile, then it deserves to fall. I will not inherit a kingdom founded on stolen lives."

Maeve watched him, a profound sense of respect replacing the lingering sting of fear from the foyer. She had spent years harboring bitterness toward the Vance name, envisioning every member of the household as a callous monster cut from the same cloth as Clara. But Julian’s willingness to dismantle his own privilege to right a historical wrong shattered her preconceived notions entirely.

"There is more," Maeve said quietly, reaching back into her robe pocket to retrieve a folded blueprint alongside a handful of faded photographs. She laid them out across the polished mahogany desk. "When I was cataloging the architectural archives in the east wing basement last week, I found the original blueprints of this manor. Pay attention to the subterranean level beneath the library."

Julian leaned over the desk, his broad shoulders tensing as he studied the intricate drafting lines. "The library basement is listed as a coal bunker and wine cellar. I’ve been down there a hundred times."

"You've been in the renovated section," Maeve corrected, pointing a slender finger at a sealed, hand-drawn amendment on the blueprint. "Look at the thickness of the eastern foundation wall. There is an unrecorded sub-basement—a secure vault built during the nineteen-fifties where your grandfather stored his private ledger and unsealed legal documents."

Clara’s composure finally cracked. A sharp gasp escaped her lips, and she instinctively reached out to steady herself against the heavy oak bookshelf. Her pale skin turned a shade lighter, and the micro-expression of absolute dread that crossed her features confirmed everything Maeve had theorized.

"You wouldn't," Clara whispered, her voice cracking slightly for the first time. "That room was sealed for a reason, Julian. Some doors are meant to stay locked forever."

Julian straightened up, towering over his mother with an expression as cold and unyielding as stone. "If there is truth buried beneath this house, Mother, I am going to dig it up with my own hands if I have to."

Without waiting for another word, Julian turned toward the heavy study door, grabbing his leather briefcase from the floor. He looked back at Maeve, offering a firm, reassuring nod. "Show me the way."
