Chapter 1

The bitter taste of spilled vintage lingered in the damp air of the grand foyer long after the heavy red stain had soaked into the pristine marble floor. Clara Vance stood breathing heavily, her silver hair pulled back in a severe bun that defied her advanced years. Her black silk dress whispered against the stone as she looked down at the crumpled figure of Maeve. The young redhead woman lay tangled in the empty wheelchair, surrounded by a chaotic fan of scattered legal papers and glistening shards of shattered crystal. Maeve’s beige robe was stained with a deep, bruised burgundy, mirroring the split skin near her lower lip where a single drop of crimson blood traced a slow, agonizing path down her chin.

Across the cavernous hall, Julian Vance stood frozen just inside the threshold. The heavy double wooden doors he had pushed open moments ago still vibrated slightly from the momentum of his entrance. His tailored grey double-breasted suit clung tightly to his broad shoulders, framing a physique that usually commanded absolute authority in any boardroom. Right now, however, the heavy leather briefcase in his right hand felt like an anchor dragging him down into an abyss of disbelief. His eyes darted from the broken glass to the trembling maid who stood cowering near the mahogany console, and finally locked onto the rigid, unyielding posture of his mother.

"Mother," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal weight that resonated off the vaulted ceiling. It was not a question, but a demand for an explanation that defied logic. Clara did not flinch. Her bony fingers still twitched with the residual adrenaline of the violent push. She adjusted the heavy pearl necklace resting against her collarbone with deliberate slowness, refusing to let her son’s sudden arrival disrupt her ironclad composure.

Maeve winced, shifting her weight against the unforgiving marble. Her green eyes, swimming with unshed tears, fixed on Julian with desperate urgency. She raised a trembling hand, her voice barely a breath above a whisper as she recalled her earlier plea. "Please, hold her..." she had begged the terrified maid just seconds before the crash, knowing that Clara's descent into madness was accelerating beyond anyone's control.

Julian dropped his briefcase. The heavy leather thudded against the floor, shattering the tense silence. He strode forward past the scattering of papers, his polished oxfords crunching softly over the ruby-tinted glass. He knelt beside Maeve, ignoring the papers entirely, and gently touched her uninjured shoulder. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently near his ear. The fragile peace the Vance family had tried so desperately to maintain for the past decade had just shattered into a million pieces, and neither Julian nor Clara knew how to pick up the razor-sharp fragments without bleeding.
