Chapter 7: The Interrogation Room

Under the harsh fluorescent lights of the downtown precinct, Julian Vance sat at a small stainless-steel table. The expensive black velvet tuxedo had been replaced by an orange detention jumpsuit, the fabric coarse and entirely ill-fitting. His dark hair was messy, falling across his forehead, and his once-confident posture was completely collapsed. He stared at his hands, handcuffed to a bolted metal ring on the table, still struggling to comprehend how his meticulously planned life had imploded in less than twenty-four hours.
The heavy steel door creaked open, and Detective Miller walked in, tossing a manila folder onto the table with a sharp thud. He pulled out a chair opposite Julian and sat down, leaning forward with a calm, methodical demeanor.
“Well, Mr. Vance, your morning has been quite productive,” Miller said, opening the folder. “Not only are you facing felony charges for the assault and physical endangerment of an expectant mother, but your father-in-law’s corporate legal team has just handed us a complete financial dossier detailing three years of systematic embezzlement from your own company accounts.”
Julian’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with disbelief and rising fury. “That’s a lie! Those accounts were private! Sterling had no right to audit—”
“Sterling didn’t have to audit them; your own sloppy paperwork did,” Miller interrupted smoothly. “You used corporate subsidiary funds to pay off personal gambling debts, fund your high-society lifestyle, and pad the accounts you used to court Miss Vance. When the market auditors ran the numbers this morning at the behest of your largest creditors, the discrepancy was glaring. You weren't just a ruthless executive, Julian. You were a thief who got caught.”
“I want to make a call,” Julian spat out, his voice shaking with helpless rage. “I demand to speak to my wife. I demand to speak to my father!”
“Your father is currently resigning from the board of directors to avoid being indicted as an accessory,” Miller replied without missing a beat. “And as for your wife... well, Miss Vance is currently watching her family’s legacy dismantled piece by piece by the very man you tried to cheat out of dignity last night.”
Julian slumped back in his chair, the crushing weight of reality finally settling into his bones. He had believed that wealth and social standing insulated a person from consequence. He had believed that power gave him the right to treat others as disposable objects. Now, sitting in a cold interrogation room with his career destroyed, his marriage in ruins, and his freedom slipping away, he realized the terrifying truth: arrogance is a fragile shield against genuine justice.

“What do they want?” Julian whispered, his voice small and broken.
“They don’t want anything from you anymore, Mr. Vance,” Miller said quietly, standing up and gathering his files. “You are entirely irrelevant. All that remains is the trial.”
