Chapter 4: The Mask Slips

The heavy glass doors of Julian’s executive suite swung open without warning. Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a detective in a sharp grey suit, walked past the stuttering secretary and straight into the office. Julian stood up abruptly, spilling a few drops of coffee onto his expensive desk blotter. His face flushed with a mixture of indignation and sudden, icy panic.

“What is the meaning of this?” Julian demanded, puffing out his chest in an effort to regain his authoritative posture. “Do you know who I am? I am the executive director of this corporation, and I demand to know why you are trespassing in my workspace.”

Detective Miller ignored Julian’s bluster, pulling a crisp legal document from his leather portfolio. He unfolded it with deliberate slowness, his eyes locking onto Julian with unblinking professional neutrality.

“Julian Vance?” the detective asked, though it was hardly a question. “You are being formally detained for questioning regarding an incident of physical assault, reckless endangerment, and infliction of intentional emotional distress reported last night at the Grand Horizon Ballroom. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

“This is absurd!” Julian shouted, his veneer of cool control finally cracking at the edges. “It was a private family dispute! The woman is unstable! My attorney will have your badges by the end of the day!”

“Your attorney is currently occupied trying to stop your corporate accounts from being frozen,” Detective Miller replied flatly. “Put your hands behind your back, Mr. Vance.”

As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, the reality of his situation began to sink in. He was escorted out of his office in broad daylight, walking past rows of glass-walled cubicles where employees stared in stunned silence. The image of the untouchable, brilliant young heir to the Vance empire was shattered in an instant. Flash photography from lurking paparazzi outside the building captured every humiliating second—his disheveled hair, his expensive suit wrinkled from the morning’s stress, and the heavy metal cuffs binding his hands.

Meanwhile, at the Vance family mansion, Clara sat in the sunroom, sipping herbal tea and waiting for Julian to call with reassurance. Instead, her phone buzzed incessantly with notifications from news apps. She tapped the screen, and her breath caught in her throat. There, splashed across the front page of every major financial and tabloid news site, was a high-resolution photograph of Julian being led away in handcuffs. Below it was a breaking headline: *Vance Group Heir Arrested for Assault; Sterling Enterprises Initiates Hostile Takeover.*

Clara dropped her teacup, the delicate porcelain shattering against the marble floor—a tragic echo of the silver glitter clutch spilling its contents the night before. Her hands shook as she dialed her father, the patriarch of the Vance family, whose face appeared on screen looking pale and aged ten years overnight.

“Dad,” Clara whispered, panic finally piercing her cold exterior. “What is happening? What did Julian do?”

“He woke a sleeping giant, Clara,” her father answered, his voice hollow and defeated. “Arthur Sterling has frozen our credit lines, called in our primary debts, and presented the district attorney with undeniable evidence of Julian’s actions. We are ruined.”
