Chapter 8: Threading the Needle

The rain had cleared by the time the gray sedan wound its way up the twisting mountain roads toward the sprawling residential estates overlooking the city lights. Maya sat in the passenger seat, having traded her light jeans and pink hoodie for a sleek, dark-blue velvet evening gown that hugged her frame without restricting her movement. Her braided hair was pinned up neatly into a complex bun, secured with a thin carbon-fiber hairpin that doubled as a lockpick.

“Remember,” Vance said, keeping his eyes on the road as he navigated past the wrought-iron security gates where a private guard checked guest credentials. “Julian’s biometric key is stored on a signet ring he wears on his right hand. He rarely takes it off, even when sleeping.”

“I’ll make sure he doesn't miss it when I borrow it,” Maya replied smoothly, adjusting the small, discreet earpiece Vance had given her.

The sedan rolled up to the grand entrance of the estate, where a row of luxury sports cars and vintage sedans sat parked along the circular driveway. A valet in a sharp tuxedo stepped forward, offering a polite, practiced smile. Vance handed over the keys with an air of effortless aristocratic entitlement, stepping out of the car and offering his arm to Maya. She took it, slipping gracefully into the role of his plus-one with the poise of someone born to high-society galas.

The interior of the mansion was a masterclass in modern minimalist opulence—floor-to-ceiling glass walls, polished marble floors reflecting the warm glow of crystal chandeliers, and soft classical string quartet music floating through the expansive rooms. Wealthy attendees in designer suits and glittering jewels mingled near the bar, speaking in hushed, conspiratorial tones about market fluctuations and political appointments.

Maya scanned the room instantly, cataloging exit routes, security personnel positions, and potential blind spots. Her eyes locked onto Julian Vance standing near the far terrace doors, engaged in conversation with a prominent senator. The heavy gold signet ring caught the chandelier light every time he gestured with his right hand.

“I see him,” Maya murmured into her earpiece, keeping her voice low.

“Move slow, Maya,” Vance’s voice crackled back through the tiny speaker. “Julian is paranoid. He travels with two private bodyguards who don’t drink and don’t blink.”

Maya took a flute of champagne from a passing waiter’s tray, taking a slow, deliberate sip as she began to navigate through the sea of affluent guests.
