Chapter 4: Digital Ghosts

The tablet screen illuminated Vance’s sharp features with a harsh blue light. On the display was a live satellite feed of the Starline Cinema parking lot. Maya recognized the timestamp in the corner—it was less than two minutes old. Two matte-black SUVs with tinted windows and obscured license plates had just pulled up directly in front of the main entrance, blocking the fire lane. Four men in identical dark tactical gear stepped out, ignoring the remaining patrons fleeing through the glass doors.
“They’re early,” Vance murmured, his eyes flicking from the screen back to Maya. “Arthur must have activated his emergency beacon before you disconnected his consciousness.”
Maya felt the chill of the autumn night cut through her pink hoodie. She looked from the tablet back to the dark mouth of the alley where it intersected with the main street. The tactical team wasn't guessing; they had precise coordinates. That meant the flash drive she was holding possessed an active, unshielded tracking beacon—something her initial sweep of the hardware hadn't detected.
“The drive is dirty,” Maya whispered, realization dawning with sudden, crushing clarity.
“It’s a beacon disguised as storage,” Vance confirmed, slipping the tablet back into his coat. “Whoever contracted you set you up from the very beginning. You were the decoy courier, walking through the front door while the real data was supposed to be smuggled out via an internal courier network. But you improvised. You got the hardware first, and now you’re the primary target.”
Maya didn’t hesitate. She whipped the lanyard off her finger, tossed the flash drive onto a greasy metal trash can lid, and drew back her foot to crush it with her heel.
“Don't!” Vance barked, lunging forward with unexpected speed. He caught her forearm just inches before her shoe connected with the plastic casing. “Destroying the drive doesn't kill the signal; it locks the decryption keys onto the master server. The moment you smash it, they receive an automated authorization to burn every digital footprint of your identity. Bank accounts, lease agreements, medical records—wiped clean before sunrise.”

Maya yanked her arm free from his grip, glaring at him with fierce independence. “I don't care about bank accounts if I’m dead, Vance!”
“You won't be dead if you come with me,” Vance said, lowering his voice to an urgent whisper as the distant sound of heavy boots echoed from the end of the alley. “I have a vehicle parked two blocks over. We have less than ninety seconds before they sweep this sector.”
