Chapter 5

The morning sun clawed its way over the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of amber and bruised violet. Maple Crest Lane was quiet, save for the rhythmic crunch of gravel beneath heavy rubber-soled boots. Maya stood on her front porch holding a steaming ceramic mug of black coffee, watching the mist slowly evaporate from the asphalt. The events of the previous day felt like a bad dream, yet the slight soreness in her knuckles served as a stark, undeniable anchor to reality.
Her peaceful morning was abruptly shattered by the grinding roar of an unfamiliar engine. A sleek, matte-black sedan turned sharply onto the suburban street, moving at an uncomfortably slow speed. The vehicle rolled past Maya’s house before coming to a complete, deliberate stop directly in front of Jax’s property. Tinted windows hid the occupants from view, but the mere presence of the car sent a sharp spike of adrenaline straight through Maya’s nervous system.
Two men stepped out of the sedan simultaneously. They were dressed identically in crisp charcoal suits, sharply contrasting with the casual suburban attire typical of Maple Crest Lane. Both wore mirrored aviator sunglasses that reflected the pale morning light, and both walked with the synchronized, deliberate cadence of men accustomed to authority and intimidation. They didn't look like local police, nor did they look like regular neighbors paying a polite morning visit.
Maya watched from her porch as the two men marched straight up Jax’s driveway. Jax was already waiting for them on his front porch, a fresh white bandage plastered neatly over the split skin on his lower chin. He didn't smile as they approached, but he gave a curt, authoritative nod of greeting. The taller of the two men leaned in close, whispering something into Jax’s ear while gesturing vaguely down the street in the direction of Maya’s house.

Instinctively, Maya stepped back into her doorway, her hand reaching behind her to ensure the front door was securely unlocked in case she needed to pull Leo inside in a hurry. She couldn't hear their conversation, but the body language was unmistakable: they were plotting, and the focal point of their discussion appeared to be her and the young boy. The veil of quiet suburban normality was rapidly peeling away, revealing the jagged, dangerous machinery turning just beneath the surface.
Ten minutes later, the black sedan peeled away from the curb with a sharp squeal of rubber, disappearing around the corner toward the highway. Jax remained on his porch for a long moment, watching the dust settle before slowly turning his head to lock eyes with Maya across the distance. He raised a hand and slowly, deliberately, drew a finger across his throat in a chilling, silent gesture of warning. Maya’s breath caught in her throat, her hand tightening around her coffee mug until her knuckles turned pure white.
